Default 1.75 nut arch tops ?

Other than Eastman, who else makes an archtop with a 1.75 nut?

"The Loar" archtops have a 1 3/4" nut width. I like the early South Korean-made LH-400 and LH-500 best but they were only made for a year or two. They have the most comfortable soft "D" shaped neck. The Taiwan-made Loar guitars have that vintage "V" neck profile - an insult to the thumb, IMO, but some players like that neck profile.

You can find them at very affordable prices used.

I too am looking for archtops with 1¾" nut, but that also have 2¼" (or something close) string spacing at the bridge. Not at all easy to find!

My loar lh-700 has a 1.75 nut. However it does feel narrower than my other guitars with the same nut width. The string spacing is different - I swapped the nut at one stage to get wider spacing but then the strings were too close to the edge. So I put the old one back. It's great for jazz and Americana but doesn't work to well for my fingerpicking.

Default Here's a nice little Weber 15"

Weber archtops list a 1 3/4" nut.

Check out that Patriot.

I am sorely tempted to get myself one of those. However, the divorce that would likely arise from that purchase could easily cost me more than the guitar.

The Gretsch G6122-1959 Chet Atkins Country Gentleman has a 1.75 inch width at the nut, and costs 3600.00 or more. How I wish Gretsch would produce more models with this width !

While I'm at it I must say that Ibanez puts out great looking, and well-reviewed, archtops, yet NONE with a wider neck.

Any suggestions on how to lobby for this ?

Also, has anyone had success with:

- replacing a narrow neck on an archtop with a wider neck, or
- installing a wider nut on an archtop with a 1 11/16th inch nut?

I was looking to get a guitar refretted here in Vancouver back in the mid-2000's and got referred by a luthier to one of his students who was starting out on her own after working at Larrivee and other places.

After I got to her garage/workshop and we discussed the refret, she showed me what she had been working on: she was commissioned by Randy Bachman to widen the neck and bring back to life all these old jazz guitars he had. She had about 6 of them in various states of progress.

What she did was to take the fretboard off; take the neck off (some of these old guys had very narrow necks) and then, because all of them were either 3 or 5 piece construction, she would take out the center strip of the neck and replace it with one that brought it to 1 3/4" (I think that's the width he was desiring...it may have been a little wider or narrower now that i think about it).

I'm not entirely sure how she did this. I'm guess she used a bandsaw and then sanded down the original? She then made a new fretboard (I'm guessing headstock too) and then went to work redoing all the trim etc. that had deteriorated over the years.

Anyways it was amazing work. Here is a link to her site which has some pics of some of her repairs:

Cheers, Peter

Red face I give up

As far as looks go I can't find one period. Everything I like is a 1.6 nut. Can't afford a custom built. Not going to spend 1100.00 on a chinese pig in a poke from yolonda.
If anyone knows of a flamed maple, violin finish, finger guard, 2 p90 with a 1 3/4 nut please let me know. Gretch has one with everything except the wide nut.....

My '34 L-4/7 (says L-4 but looks more like an L-7) has a 1 &3/4" nutwidth.

We compared it to an L-5 from same year - identical neck geometry.
