Default YouTube: Paul Asbell, Michael Chapdelaine, Todd Rose Guitars at Newport

Hi everybody -

The videos from the Newport Guitar Festival are still surfacing on YouTube. Here are two of Paul Asbell and Michael Chapdelaine playing mini-concerts on my guitars. Paul is playing a Headwaters guitar - my smaller body model (14" lower bout) - in bearclaw sitka and ziricote. Michael is playing an Allegheny guitar - my "small jumbo" model (15 1/2" lower bout) - in Lutz spruce and palo escrito. Of course, the audio quality in these YouTube videos leaves something to be desired, but I hope you'll enjoy the music made by these superb players anyway.

If you have any questions about the guitars or anything, fire away.

Thanks,
Todd

P.S. Here's another one that's just been posted on YouTube - Michael again:

Nice guitars. Watching Mike is always a pleasure. Its been a while since I had spoken to him- actually last time I saw him was at the Newport in Miami Beach.
Funny guy, incredible player.
Thanks for the vids!

Thank you, Ehvamone.

I was quite captivated by Michael's interpretation of Albeniz's "Rumores de la Caleta" - and, admittedly, very gratified to hear it played effectively on my steel string guitar (one thing I notice in the audio quality of this YouTube video is how a lot of the note separation is lost; it really sounded a lot better live).

... And then his rendition of McCartney's "Yesterday" - I often balk at instrumental arrangements of Beatles tunes; so many sound like elevator music to me - but his arrangement and sensitive performance brought out the beauty of the melody so compellingly... I found it spellbinding.

Make no mistake, Mike is a master..classical, popular tunes, whatever he plays, he plays it right. Probably one of the most underrated guitarists in the world, and I say that knowing how many competitions he has won and accolades he has received. I am biased though, he really is a great guy.
As for youtube.. yeah, the audio always suck on it. Not to put it so crassly, but there is really no other way to say it. A good idea is to link to your website a higher resolution vid or audio for those who really want to hear the guitar as it should be heard. It seams to me that the guitars most definitely deserve a higher quality format. If Mike was moved to play classical on it, then I imagine it must really be a nice sounding guitar.

Another video of Michael playing my guitars at Newport has now been posted. I haven't even seen this one yet myself, because I'm on dial-up and haven't had time to download it. I believe he plays more on the same Allegheny guitar, and also some on the Headwaters guitar. Here it is:

I hope you enjoy it.

I confess that I'm so in love with the sound of this particular guitar, I've decided not to sell it. That one's *mine*.

Ha, You go! I would too. I think its one reason I could never be a luthier.. I'd one copy of everything I built.
BTW, I checked out your website, you should be receiving an email from me with a few questions, soon as I get home from work.

I should know what that piece is - it's so familiar - but I'm afraid I can't tell you.

Although the original artist didn't make the song, "A Whiter Shade of Pale," sound so lovely. Paul brings out the beauty of the melody.

OOOPS! The second piece just started. Maybe it's the one you were asking about. I don't recognize it, but it somehow reminds me of Doc Watson.

Thanks for reminding us of "A Whiter Shade of Pale" by Procol Harum, Dave.

I just posted some photos of the bearclaw sitka/ziricote/walnut Headwaters guitar that both Paul and Michael play in these videos, in the AGF Gallery, for anyone who'd like to get a better look at this guitar.

I finally had a chance to download and watch the other Michael Chapdelaine video, where he plays his composition, "Lullaby for Two" on this guitar. Lovely piece! Very creative. I really like it. Thumbs up to Michael.
