Default Virtual Pity Party, You're invited!

You're all invited, but you don't have to show up.
Two days after accepting a job offer (first job in 2 years) I crashed on my bicycle and jammed my thumb into a curb. I'm now scheduled for surgery on my B-day Sept 11th to repair a detached ligament that has also snapped out of position and is lying on top of tendons that it should be beneath. The injury was 3 weeks ago and it'll be at least another 3 months recovery. My actual party has been cancelled so I'm I'd appreciate all you fine folks would "attend" my Virtual Pity Party tomorrow morning. No gifts please but I would be happy if when you're sipping your coffee tomorrow morning you would quietly mumble to yourself
"Sorry Todd, sucks to be you".
Thank you. Please drive home safely, wouldn't want anyone to get injured

Ouch. Promise to give you a thought.

But to be brutally practical -- left or right thumb?

Ouch, indeed! So sorry to hear about your accident. I hope that the surgery goes well and that you recover quickly and fully! Keep us posted when you can.

Best,
Jayne

I'm attending early.

I pity you, but I'm not sure how much.

Does this "job" require use of your thumb?

Good thing you aren't "all thumbs", as you's have been unable to type this post

I have decided to give a thumbs down () to bicycle riding. Too many friends have had injuries: dislocations (usually of digits), fractures (ribs, clavicles, neck, kneecap), concussions galore, etc.

Sympathies, Todd. Any hand injury is a big deal to a guitar player. I gave up on bicycles a long time ago. These days my riding is done on a recumbent trike (Sun EZ-3 HD). I might someday get hit by something, but it is unlikely that I will ever fall down and crash.

Good luck with the surgery and heal well! I'm busy recovering from an Achilles tendon rupture two months ago myself. Do what the docs and especially the PT says. Be diligent with your rehab but don't overdo things. As my wife often says, "don't be such a guy"!

I'll be with you in spirit. I'm having a colonoscopy the same day. Prepping at this very minute. Gosh, this is fun.

I feel your pain. I have a bunion from tripping while trying catch my kids that needs to go under the knife, fractured my right elbow two years ago (bicycle accident) and dislocated my right thumb (another bicycle injury.) Tylenol is my friend but I will never give up cycling. I just try to be more careful, though my running days are over. Thankfully it hasn't affected my guitar playing.

I give you credit for going under the knife. I can't bring myself to it. Get well soon!

Thanks so much everyone. It's my left thumb and I am right handed but play left handed due to a congenital defect in my left arm (bones fused together and material that allows rotation is not there) so I can't hold my hand palm up or hold a neck in my left hand. Have limited flex/rotation at the wrist too, can only strum with whole arm. I used to get really down on myself because of all the things I can't do. With age I've been able to change my attitude to "focus on what you CAN do, search for something unique that nobody else can do". I am primarily an electric player but love a nice acoustic. Plus of all the guitar forums I've ever read, this place by far has the best community and friendly, sharing, "non jerk" members. I love playing guitar as best I can and my only goal is to never stop learning and improving.
Thank again folks!

Good to hear your fretting hand will not be the one in recuperation, especially given the strain created by the thumb behind the neck (imagine barre chords on a 12-string, yikes!). You figured out ways to pick with your left, so you've already got superior neuroplasticity going for you.

I'm hoping it heals quickly and you can get back to what you love.

Ouch. Sending best wishes for a speedy recovery, and as happy a b-day as possible. Some days just rot. Hope today turns out better than anticipated.

I was going to say! I guess too late to counsel OKCTodd on this. Not too late to express profound pity! Thumbs are rather important fixtures!
