Recording a Video Demo.
More and more I'm finding that new places are asking for a "video resume" before first time booking.
I've seen plenty of these on YouTube/ Facebook and I think I know what I want. One thing I've noticed is the quality of the mobile phone recordings is extremely poor, especially the audio. So, what did you do for yours? Any tips regarding audio, video, lighting. Was there anything after that you thought "well, that was a lesson learned" Basically, school me so I do steal your good ideas and avoid your mistakes. Cheers |

There's a big problem with any camera mounted microphone - the mic is nearly always too far from the source. The only exception might be when the camera has a very wide angle lens which allows close placement of the camera, but that nearly always results in a distorted image.
So the first thing to do to improve audio quality is to separate the mic from the camera in some way. This can be done either by connecting an external mic at some distance from the camera or by recording on a separate system then merging the audio and video in post. Syncing in post requires capable software and the patience to learn to use it. Connecting an external mic requires either a camera with a decent quality audio input or some sort of attachment for the camera that enables a mic connection. Here are blog posts about two free PC programs that can be used for syncing and editing video: http://www.homebrewedmusic.com/2017/...-express-2017/ http://www.homebrewedmusic.com/2017/...a-lampg-video/ Here's a comparison of a couple of cameras, one a very wide angle "music camera" and the other an inexpensive camcorder: http://www.homebrewedmusic.com/2016/...canon-hf-r500/ And here's a look at one device for connecting high quality mics to a smart phone: http://www.homebrewedmusic.com/2015/...-lampg-videos/ Oh, and here's a look at using REAPER audio editing software for syncing and editing video: http://www.homebrewedmusic.com/2011/...o-in-reaper-4/ Fran

in other words "How much time and money are you willing spend ?" That said arguably the video in a mobile phone is not the problem the audio is.. So you can use a later model smart phone for the video portion. Something like a Zoom or similar all in one device for the audio will also probably be sufficient for a booking video . Then as Frann pointed out some kind of sync'ing software .

There are some Sony and canon small pocket digital cameras that have surprisingly good audio capture.
You needn't go crazy trying to produce the 'very best possible' when asked for videos, people just want to hear what you sound like - they dont' care if its hand-held and not 'professional'. Even some phones do pretty well now.
