Default Replacement for Kluson Deluxe 3-on-a-plate tuners?

Had a guitar made for me for which I got a set of these Kluson tuners, but they don't work very well—unstable, and tuning down is especially rough, always lots of slack. If anyone here is familiar with these, can you recommend a better-performing replacement that wouldn't require surgery on the headstock?

Gotoh makes Kluson Deluxe replicas. One source is Stew Mac.

If you were to remove them it would be easy to notice if the three
holes line up with the three posts perfectly. If there's a drag it could
make tuning... a drag...
