Default Gig Bag Mini Shootout

Although I have a very good Hiscox hard case, I “borrowed” a soft gig bag from my wife, to make hauling my guitar to local gigs easier. Well, the string ends at the tuners wore a hole into the lining of that gig bag, so I decided to let my fingers do the shopping on Amazon. Since I will not use this as a travel case on an airplane, I ruled out anything much above $100. Perhaps my search will help my AGF brethren (and sistern?) who are facing the same issue.

First I ordered the Gator gig bag at slightly over my limit…$109.99 (https://amzn.to/2tH7l0j). It was big and well padded, but felt like overkill. It was not that much lighter than my hard case. Plus I was not that crazy about the pockets. Well, it has free returns…hmmm, maybe there are other candidates.

So then I ordered a Cahaya bag at the other end of the spectrum at $29.89 (https://amzn.to/2ukLLyP). It looked kinda thin, but well made. Did not like the pockets - the upper pocket is very tight(I am picky). Plus it was super-floppy.

So, I ordered one more…a Protec bag in the middle of the spectrum at $55.53…( https://amzn.to/2sSnaB0). Suddenly, the three bears’ porridge came to mind. It had some padding, without being obnoxious about it. The weight was reasonable. It had good pockets – the lower pocket even has a place for a pen and a cell-phone. Okay, there was no neck support…but the straps were good. Hmmm, this seems to be just right. Ding…ding…ding…we have a winner.

As always, YMMV.

I similarly tried a Cahaya.

I went back to SKB which I love. In fact I sold my Taylor hard case (for one of my two Taylor electrics ) and bought an SKB bag - love those.

I had the opportunity to purchase two Schecter "pro" electric guitar bags, a single and a double; and found them to be really substantial. I have no firsthand experience with their acoustic bag https://www.schecterguitars.com/acce...ht-case-detail but think it would be worth taking a look. $89 on their website...
