Here's a bit of trivia for movie buffs, especially film noir fans:
The new Roadhouse takes place in a Florida community called Glass Key. I haven't seen it mentioned, but as one of the aforementioned film noir fans I think this has to be a nod to the 1942 movie The Glass Key, based on the 1931 novel by Dashiell Hammett. It doesn't seem possible the name just came out of nowhere, PLUS the 1942 movie features some really violent (for the time) scenes of star Alan Ladd getting beat up by bad guy henchman William Bendix.

I will say over the last few years I've watched some of the 80's and early 90's movies that were "blockbusters" at the time, and it's pretty funny how hokey they are now.

First, I haven’t seen the new one, but: Everyone who watches the movie knows what it’s about before it starts. Why would anyone expect a good, or even adequate, film, given the subject matter and the absurdity of the first movie? It’s cheesy entertainment, and that’s all - there’s no art involved. And I say this as a guy who will watch the first one any time I happen upon it on the tube. It’s stupid, but in a good way. And everyone who’s acting in it knows that - it’s what makes it worth watching. It may very well be the worst movie any of them have been in, but they suck it up and buy into it for the duration. Even the violence is funny because it goes WAY past gratuitous, and straight into ludicrous territory. It’s cheese of the highest magnitude. Swayze looks exactly like what he is, a scrawny dancer. Sam Elliot is just being Sam Elliot. Ben Gazzara does the worst acting of his career, and seems to be loving it. It’s not just cheese, it’s gourmet cheese.

Bad reviews don't hurt.

The new one was just barely entertaining. It seemed like they drifted too close to being a comedy (e.g., the joke about the piano tuning). And the things that the characters never seem to learned from watching an action movie: if you're going to stab someone, finish them off, dont just walk away all troubled. And the doctors who never seem to have to work. I too was put off by the miscasting of Jessica Williams. No matter how buff Jake G looked, sometimes you couldn't help to notice how small he was compared to the bad guys.
But if you guys want to see some really violent vengeance porn, check out the new release Monkey Man. Written, directed, produced, and starring Dev Patel (Slumdog Millionaire). It's not my thing, but I recognize some first rate movie making going on. |

I don’t mind cartoonish violence that features endless punches and never ending magazines. It kinda bounces off like the Merry Melodies of my youth but Reservior Dogs stuff is not favored at all.
