Worth the effort
I agree. I think there is always room for improvement in everything we do and analyzing the current status is the starting point. Just because we have been doing something a certain way for a long time doesn't mean it's the best method. I have discovered some great techniques that I never knew I could use until someone pointed them out and I tried them, and they became my new standard approach. Learning never ends.

Wrist strums more precise and higher top end speed available but if that matters at all depends on what you are playing.

I'm a flatpicker and I've pretty much nailed the boom chuck. I never miss the bass note. I'm a one trick pony. I have been working so hard to break out of the boom chuck. I would really like to be more versatile when it comes to strumming. It does not have to be one or the other.

To each his own, of course...but the wrist technique can do everything the elbow swing can, with less damage to the instrument.

Fast or slow, it has to be rhythmic.
I play in a few Irish trad sessions. That's a good workout. The objective is to enhance the melody and stay in the background, not just chug along. Palm muting, left hand muting, syncopation, alternate voicing, dynamics, not playing at all. You could check out how John Doyle does it. There's not many that good at it.
