Default Got any change?

Fiddling a bit with the truss rod and would like to check string to 12th fret distance using pocket change.

What works?

One reply? And it's wrong? A quarter is slightly more than 1/16" thick.

I'm confused. What has the 12th fret string height got to do with the truss rod adjustment? Not quite sure what you're getting after. Can you clarify, please?

Was in a GC store last year playing Martins, one of which had a very high action, and when I told the salesman, he took it to the workroom, and quickly brought it back fixed. Action at fret 12 where it belonged, not up at Brooklyn bridge height.

He said he turned the trussrod nut. Said that's all that was needed.

A little research on the intertoobz resulted in the thickness of two dimes as a quick measure for the bass E gap. Two dimes have a thickness of 0.106", just under that 7/32" number some say is the upper limit. In my case, with the Yamaha I have with me, two dimes won't fit under, but jack up the string a scootch.

Is that a red scootch or a blonde scootch?

The truss rod is for adjusting relief (in the middle of the neck), not the height of the strings at the 12th fret.

7/32", bass E at the 12th fret is crazy high. 6/64" is "normal", with some folks slight lower or higher (by 1/64") depending on preference and playing style.
