Default PSA for callouses

Stay the heck out of swimming pools. I look really stupid keeping my fretting hand above the water

Learn to adjust!

Back in my prime I was earning most of my money as a scuba instructor. A typical evening gig followed a couple hours underwater earlier that day. I learned not to attempt pull-off notes after a day in the water because it was so easy to pull an entire callous off a finger that had water-logged. Hammer-ons were fine; pull-offs were hazardous.

Ah, the good old days! Back then my guitar always smelled a bit fishy. I had a mahogany spear gun to match my all-hog Guild. Life was so much more simple back then.

No trouble here. I dive and then play the guitar for 2 hours, 2 hours later. No issues.

Maybe this is different for everyone because I just trained for and swam a 2-mile open water race. I’m also a full time musician and play at least 5 shows a week. During peak training days, I’ll be in the water for 90 minutes and then play a show a couple of hours later.

On the day of the 2-mile race, I was in the water for 75 minutes and then had to play a show 1.5 hrs after finishing - no issues with calluses that you speak of.

I've tried the "Honey I can't get my callouses wet" excuse to get out of doing the dishes but surprisingly my wife was not sympathetic.
Swimming, doing the dishes, whatever, let the fingers dry out 5 minutes or so and I'm good to go. I didn't really realize this was a problem for some folks.

Yea, never had a problem here either. My callouses aren't even all that hard anymore, just thick and leathery. Water doesn't seem to have any effect on em.

Swimming to me is staying alive if I'm in water that will cover my upper lip. I can do it, but I never seek out the experience! So, no callous issues for me and swimming. ;-)

Default No callouses

After 55 years of playing I have no callouses just very tough fingertips and most likely nerve damage.
