Default NGD: Elijah Jewel custom

Elijah Jewel guitars is run by luthier Michael Kerry in Mineola, Texas. I heard about this company from a fellow AGF member. I called Mr. Kerry and arranged a visit to his shop. Since he is only 15 minutes away, it was a short trip! I was impressed with Mr. Kerry and his guitars, so I put down some money for a special build. We discussed all of the many options and I decided on sinker redwood for the top, and walnut for the back and sides. The neck is also walnut. The bridge and fretboard are ebony.

Instead of his standard headstock, which is beautiful on its own, I went with a standard Martin paddle shape. I am an archeologist and wanted Arrowhead inlays with the word "Native" inlayed at the 12th fret. The word Native also symbolizes the use of native tree species for the wood.

I received the guitar today after a modest wait of around 5 months. I currently own a D35, a D18, and several American Guild guitars. I have, of course, played many others.

This guitar is simply phenomenal. It's my first custom and it is absolutely beautiful. I don't think I have ever seen a more attractive guitar (in my opinion only). Build quality, fit and finish, are exceptional.

I was quite surprised by the tone. It's easily a rival to my D35, with great bass and treble and very slightly scooped mids. I could easily be happy with this guitar as an "only" guitar. It has plenty of headroom, though perhaps not as much headroom as the Martin's.

Simply put, this is just a wonderful guitar. Mr. Kerry worked with me on every aspect of the guitar, including researching specific neck shapes. The price for these guitars is way less than most customs and the guitar will rival any on the market.

That's a nice looking guitar. The top and back woods are beautiful.

I think the only reason it doesn't quite have the headroom of your Martin is because of the redwood. Redwood doesn't quite have as much headroom.

I think we are both lucky because I can't see him keeping his prices this low for much longer.

Nice stuff. Growing up in the home of an East Texas archaeologist, I’ve spent many a day looking for arrowheads and spear points and pottery. It’s nice to see it commemorated on a guitar. If you ever come down Nacogdoches way, bring your guitar by our shop, we would love to see it.
