I was referring to slapping the strings.

I thought it was revelatory when I first heard and then saw Michael Hedges. I don’t seek out that style at this point. Once in a while I hear a song that sounds good with a percussive style. But I think it should be used sparingly.

It's something that can be over done. I like it when it fits, but not on every tune. There's some great talent out there that use it, Don Ross, Andy McKee, etc.
It's just not something that I was ever interested in learning. Even those artificial harmonics used by many artists seem to be more of a parlor trick to me and again, this too I was never interested in learning from a player's point of view. Wouldn't hurt me to try to learn some of the above though. Retirement is coming

Both are way overdone. They long ago became cliches that are the acoustic equivalent of Van Halen finger-tapped arpeggios and the sliding of the pick along the wound strings.

The "slappy, tappy" technique tempts me to demonstrate my "whappy" technique on the player...

Yeah, I get it guys - it’s not my cup of tea when coming from most contemporary players either. I still quite like some early Michael Hedges though.

At first I thought it was neat, and I still do sometimes. But for the most part now it bores me. The novelty got old really fast.

Overdone to one person is not overdone to another.
Plus, anything can be overdone. Anything I'd say, except health, happiness, love, and maybe wealth. That said, if you feel something is over done, then don't do it that much, or don't partake when others do it more than you prefer. If you are not the source of what you feel is overdone ... stop the video, change the radio station, or walk out of the venue. Nobody's forced to like what others like - but I'll defend their right to do it. As long as they're not harming others, or committing a crime, I'll just let others have a different opinion about what is too much of something. Last edited by Tico; 09-25-2020 at 05:06 AM. |

Good point, Tico - just because I’m not wild about some techniques - in this case, tapping - doesn’t mean that they don’t have validity. If players choose to express themselves that way, it’s their call.
Just as it’s my call as to whether I want to stick around to hear it! Whatever works... whm |
