Default speaker horns

hi all, i bought a cheap crate powered mixer- like new, 4 channel with reverb just to use at home- it gets plenty loud, i made 2 cabs for it, i put 10" speakers in it, i have room for small 2x5 or 2x6 horns- i see part express have these for $3 each- i see people using a resistor or cap in series to tame down the highs- is there a certain size i should use and which is better? BTW- are these $3 dollar horns junk? TIA- john

You'll want a basic crossover to divide the frequencies between the two drivers (woofer and horn) to protect the horns from bass, and at that point it's a simple next step to install a small pot for a level control of the horns.

I am assuming, given your description and the price, that these are cheap piezo horns. They only require a capacitor in series with them for the "crossover" function. They work, primarily, above 5K or so, to provide, mostly, spit-n-sizzle.

So, how'd your project turn out?

Spit-n-sizzle? That's so funny! I used caps for years in JBL raw frame systems and they sounded great.

ok, got the horns from a friend and used a 20watt cement resistor is series to cut the highs a little, turns out my speaker cab is undersized to add the horns unless i shoe horn them in, so this will be another closet storage learning experience

When you get around to doing this project you need to use the appropriate capacitor in series to cut lower frequencies from the horn(s) to prevent damage to it/them.

Here ya go. You just need the impedance of your two speakers and the desired frequency handoff.

Default Speaker Horns

Forget all that shopping, cutting, wiring, worrying about power handling/crossover frequency/impedance matching/phase - just Krazy Glue a set of these bad boys on top of both your cabs and really get some audience attention :

The horns could be mounted in a separate box or frame you attach to the top of your speaker cabinets. High frequency drivers don't need an enclosure to work.
