I’m bald (or at least balding enough to shave off what’s left) and have worn hats all-day most days for many years. Mostly fedora-style.
One suggestion, although style is a personal and individual thing... match the hat to the rest of the look. A lot of people tell me they wish they could “pull off a hat” like me, and I don’t believe I have an especially hat friendly head or face. It’s just about finding the right hats for the individual, just like sunglasses. Often when people try on a hat they are self conscious, but also not necessarily walking into the hat shop wearing clothes that work with the hats they try on. A formal fedora doesn’t match well with a t-shirt and shorts (I’m generalizing, people can wear whatever they want, but some styles clash more than others and it’s up to you to decide what statement you want to make). I’ve found that for my general clothing styles a fedora WITHOUT a band is a better fit. I have some with bands that are more formal, but I only wear them when I’m dressed more formally. Brim size matters a lot. Wide brims work really well outdoors, but can (again, generalizing) make for a bold statement indoors. Narrow brims don’t look good on everyone (and have a certain reputation) but a good mid-size brim can be super versatile. So yeah, I say get some hats and try them out. I started with a bunch of cheap hats maybe 12 years ago, then got into Stetsons and similar, then Borsalino and similar, and now I buy almost exclusively customs from Worth and Worth in NYC. Orlando (the owner and designer) is an amazing person. This is my favorite and most versatile hat: |

Gigging hat suggestions
Given some of the places I gigged in my teens/twenties, one of these might have been in order:

Oops. Posted this before realizing this was a zombie thread. Oh well...
Richard Thompson's been rocking a beret for as long as I've been going to see him. Pretty good look, spoken as another bearded balding guy. Richard Thompson by Ray, on Flickr -Ray

I had to have a gold top back then, with p 90s. Had to. Freddie King, Danny Kirwin, RT.
John Martyn iirc later owned That one. I managed to snag a Goldie. Still got. For hats, I favor the mid 70s redsox red hats w blue bills.

Ask Andy.
Andy Powell, the fireball of Wishbone Ash. He started balding in his twenties in 1970. Here he is in '72: And here he is today: He got over it and surfed the head. Manly! Bob

I've been wearing these for over 25 years.Excellent hats and I have several to rotate for my outdoor Farmers markets gigs.Tilley hats: they are NOT made in China. They are elegant, stylish ,durable and have a lifetime warranty. https://www.tilley.com Last edited by guitargabor; 07-31-2021 at 09:30 AM. |

I also have a balding buzzed head and for outdoor occasions wear bandana, ballcap, or tilley style depending on weather. For indoor events I would wear a knitted toque if it was that cold that I would also wear a coat. Otherwise I find head coverings indoors just silly.
