Default Stack O'Lee Blues

I enjoyed edmond's version of Casey Jones yesterday (and his mouth watering video that went with it!) and got inspired to record some MJH myself. This is based on his original version from 1928.

Very nice Bob!

And nice to hear you sing! Those old blues pieces sure provide a lot of guitar playing fodder, don't they!

Well done!

- Glenn

Hey Bob, really nice. Glad you're keeping the MJH coming to us.

Nicely done! This song is interesting in terms of the number of versions, and variations on the central theme - an argument, a Stetson hat, a 44, and a bad to the bone thug seem consistent, however. Lots of variations on the name/spelling as well.

Thanks, Chuck! I've now spent a year with his stuff. It was a great exercise for a newer fingerpicker. Moving on to ragtime soon, probably biting off more than I can chew!

Thanks a lot, Grizzly. This is quite a folk song. I first heard a variation of it by the Grateful Dead spelled Stagolee. The lawman's name is Baio. Billy didn't steal the hat, he won it in a dice game. And it is told in large part from the point of view of Billy's wife, who shoots Stagolee in a strategic location and has Baio drag him off to city hall to be hung. Great stuff!

I appreciate that a whole lot, Joe! As long as I don't have to play at his tempos I really enjoy his stuff

...[snip]...
Look into Piedmont style, it's a great combination of blues and ragtime. Might be a nice way to transition what you've got under your belt.
