Default Some Stapleton on an $80 guitar

My daughter got a brand new hog top GS Mini for her birthday a couple months back. Since then her original guitar - a miniature Jasmine catgut - has been sitting in a corner. We had a snow day today and I noticed it seeming lonely in the corner so I dusted it off and attempted some Chris Stapleton on it. It felt a lot like strumming a violin ;-)

Nicely done! Proving that an $80 Guitar can sound good in the right hands.

Hi Brent!

That was cool! You know, I don't think it matters that much what you play as long as you get to sing. Awesome voice, Brent!

Well done!

haha strumming a violin. I kind of know what you mean. Your voice is amazing though so the video sounds GREAT regardless of that guitar haha. cheers

Default Great production

Brent,

Thanks for this posting. I don't know how you recorded this, but I wish many others would use your method. My old ears can no longer pick out the voice from the accompaniment on many postings.

Of course, you have a strong voice so you may have an advantage over others. That little guitar did its job and sounded OK to me.

Thanks for the kind words, guys.

Nothing fancy in the recording, Rendall - an AKG 414 into a Focusrite Saffire Pro 14. I put a little compression and a touch of room reverb.

What a voice. Loved your singing. Playing was good and guitar did its part.

You've got an awesome voice my friend. I could be wrong but I'm guessing you grew up hearing 90's county like I did.

I'd like to hear you do some Randy Travis songs.

Keep on a pickin'

Good ear, Ben. I've always listened predominantly to more classic country - Waylon, Hank, Hagg, Jones, with a healthy dosage of John Prine and Kristofferson thrown in. That said, I was in my late teens/early 20's and playing house parties and bars then, so I was playing a steady diet of 90's country. While I consider Randy Travis more in the classic vein (even with his newer stuff) I've always been a massive fan of his songs and amazing voice. I'll throw a couple together.

Thanks to your awesome version I learned this song and will bring it to my open mic end of Feb. Love Chris Stapelton and your version is awesome. Do you know Chris Knight? You would kill some of his songs. Look at “Something Changed”. Joe

I don’t, Joe, but I’ll definitely check him out - I always love hearing new stuff. Been on a massive Jason Isbell and Tyler Childers kick lately so I’m due for something new ;-).

Thanks.

What a voice man, and what a wonderful performance.

I am a fan of the guitar soundtrack from 'This is Us' TV show. He performs all the music on a $25 junker guitar and there is something about the dull thud of his guitar that is magical on the recording. Who says budget guitars can't record?
