Default Pono OO-40VS

Introducing one of our new OO size guitars, the OO-40VS.
The 40 designation for all of our guitars is Ebony body woods.
VS is vintage and slotted headstock. Besides the slotted headstock, this model is a "vintage" style due to a 12 fret to body design, and 24.75" scale length.

OO size guitars in the past retained these specs until the late 1920's. At that time 14 frets to the body became popular, and eventually a longer scale length.
One other factor was the fingerboard width at the nut and string spacing at the saddle. Fingerboards were wide, enabling easier finger style playing.

Most manufacturers today (including Ko'olau and Pono) still make guitars to "vintage" specs. Aside from the fingerboard width, in the attached video you will notice the tone of an OO size guitar when the body meets at the 12th fret. This places the bridge in a different location, producing a full and rounded tone. A deep and resonant vibration against the chest.
And the shorter scale length (24.75") causes less tension, makes it easier to play, and further enhances it's deep warm tone.

For our OO-40VS we use Ebony for our back and sides. Most OO models in the past were either mahogany or rosewood. No one thought to use Ebony, as most Ebony was from Africa and used for fingerboards and bridges. Our Ebony is a species called Macassar Ebony. Many modern builders today are using Macassar Ebony, but it's difficult due to it's density and weight. We almost liken it to "black" maple. This guitar has the deep resonance that we associate with Rosewood, but a crisp and clean clarity common to maple.

However other factors mentioned above, such as a short scale length and 12 frets to the body combine to make this a very unique style of guitar. We call it "vintage" but in many ways it's not. Instead this guitar is something we like, and think you will too.

Most of our customers have noticed that we have fun making unusual guitars.

Don't take this the wrong way, but you're website is kind of confusing. If you go on there now, this guitar is not listed. Also, when you have your sales from time to time, there are a lot of models not on the website. It's confusing to keep track of the specs and what they look like when they're all not depicted on the site.

Just trying to help out.

Also, if you click the link on your signature, it results in an error and the page doesn't display.
