Hello again, Chas - you're way over thinking this. Not dissimilar to your last post. This is a great old song (Tim Hardin, I think). I have sung the Rodder's version in public many, many, many times. You have to sing the song to get the feel and rhythm. Sing the 'bejaysus' out of it. Get your feet and arms moving. Once you know and feel the song, the strumming will come - and that will support your singing - not the other way around if you're focussing on D U down-up stuff.
