SOLD: 1977 Gurian JR Jumbo Rosewood Acoustic Guitar

I have a circa 1977 Gurian JR Jumbo Rosewood guitar for sale. If you’re unfamiliar with Gurian guitars, you are really missing out on something. The Gurian Guitar company was founded around 1965 by luthier Michael Gurian who first built classical then steel string instruments with a number of unique design features including a more rounded body shape than those of other manufacturers, a long scale length, narrow "electric"-style neck, and an unusual fan-derived bracing system for the top of the guitar. Gurian was one of the first boutique acoustic guitar makers of the modern era, and laid the groundwork for future premium boutique makers like Collings and Santa Cruz. Gurians have a reputation for good clarity and a beautiful, distinctive tone. Gurians were favored at one time by several well-known acoustic players including Paul Simon and Jackson Browne and fingerstyle players Pierre Bensusan, John Renbourn and Ralf Illenberger. They are extremely popular for fingerstyle playing, but they have fast necks and a really bright, crisp sound when played with a pick. Gurians are comparatively rare - production totals from the "Gurian Guitars Identification & Registry" indicate that only around 5,000 ever reached the market. Only a handful show up each year on the market.

This particular model of Gurian, the JR or Jumbo Rosewood, is especially rare. It has Indian Rosewood sides and back, Sitka Spruce top, and an Ebony fingerboard. The scale length is 25.6", the nut width is 1-5/8", and the string spacing is 1-3/8” at the nut and 2-1/4” at the bridge. The serial number is C2481. It is a pre fire instrument from the Hinsdale plant. This guitar is in very good shape for a 44 year old instrument. There are a few minor dings, scratches,and signs of wear on the instrument, but not very many. There are two noticeable flaws, however. There is a flaw beneath the finish on the back of the instrument, which can be seen in the photos. I am not sure what may have caused this. There is also two hairline finish separations in the finish on the front of the instrument. One is from the bridge down to the bottom, and the other is parallel to the first separation, but not as long. I had two luthiers check this out, and both of them assured me that there is no structural impact from these cracks in the finish, i.e. the wood has not been impacted. There is quite a bit of fret wear as it has never been re-fretted. The guitar is also fitted for a pickup. The pickup is still mounted inside the guitar but does not work. The end piece jack, however, is still in place and can reused with a new pickup. Everything else on the guitar is in great shape with little to no finish checking. The wood is gorgeous across the entire guitar and the tone is to die for. Sonically, the wood has aged beautifully. You are not likely to see another Gurian JR in as good a shape as this one for a long time. And that unique Gurian tone. Man is it sweet! Comes with the original, somewhat weather-worn, hard shell case.

I have a ‘78 JR and it’s everything BlueWolf said it is. Unique tone, monster sound. This is the first JR I’ve seen on the market in 4 or 5 years.
