Top is more or less ready. I will need to refine some of the tap tones but they are easily heard after the top is fastened to the sides. (Which is why i have reversed my building sequence)



You can probably tell what is going on here. I will say that the sides are now so stiff that the mold is not needed.

Looking fab John! The insides are also very neat and clean, loving it.

Given that its the first time you are working with T14, any thoughts to share about the tap tone at this point? Are you able to draw any differences from the cedars and the spruces which you are so used to?

T-14 has a very clear bell like tap tone. I’m torn between trying to lower the frequency just a hair and leaving it where it is. My inclination right now is to leave it and hope the bass rings out as i think it will. If it needs encouragement i can do that later in the build. I have no doubt that the trebles and the mids will be just fine.

From the previous pictures it seems as though the popular vote in the poll won. We went with African Blackwood bindings and the Fiddleback Tree purflings for understated elegance.

But the desire to scratch the artistic itch couldn’t be subdued and even with such a pretty Cocobolo back there was an apparent need to add some extra design elements here and there. John threw up many many ideas for back decor and we went back and forth too many times I felt pretty bad. He even made mock ups too and that was when he said ambonya burl may just be what we were looking for. I unhesitatingly agreed BUT......


in a sudden twist of events, the ambonya burl segment got switched out and this is what we ended up with:



Scorched Fiddleback bordered in abalone!

John used an ancient technique with hot sand to create this effect on the Fiddleback... I think it accentuates the flames even more and with the abalone the segments give off a stunning visual impact.

I especially am in love with the strip down the center strip ... with the Fiddleback looking as if it’s fading in and out of the ABW.

News flash. Third Senior outside social distancing gig on a nice residence courtyard tomorrow morning! It is supposed to be 100 degrees so I am glad I can set up in the shade!

Good on you Paul.. I’m happy you have the gig, but I don’t know how you take the heat. I’m sitting on the balcony of Pisgah Inn just off the blue ridge parkway and its 64 degrees and heading down to 47 tonight.
