I had the pleasure of seeing him play - for the Cosmos - in 1977. He was pretty good for a 37 year old!

The Cosmos played in Denver and after the game, Pele was surrounded by media and fans on the field. My buddy went on the field and I saw the crowd part for him as he approached Pele and they had a long, animated conversation. He grew up the son of a missionary in Brazil and just started speaking Portuguese when he approached the group. He said Pele was every bit as gracious as you'd hope a hero to be.

One of the legends - like George Best, Muhammad Ali, Vivian Richards, and Bjorn Borg: the best of the best.

This is what made him stand head and shoulders above the pretenders like Maradonna and Messi: good, maybe great, but Pele was and remains the greatest. Sad day for all soccer fans.

When I was much younger, Pele was the ONLY "soccer" player well known in the USA.
I hope he had as great a life as it appeared on the field and in the media. |

I'm not really a soccer guy but I know enough to know that he is among the elite. Muhammad Ali, Michael Jordan, Babe Ruth territory.
