Thanks DanR, it’s coming together very well. The tap tone is very responsive and strong. I’m looking forward to hearing this torrefied Hard Maple.

Thanks Carpinteria, I’m enjoying working with this Maple theme. The colors, figure and the texture of both the wood and the sound tones are all contributing to a unique instrument.

Thanks gregc! More to come. I've got the fretboard and headstock glued on and tomorrow I'll carve the neck and will start the final clean-up in preparation for the finish.
Thanks again

Default Ready for Finish

I've got this Piña parlor all set for finish so we won't be seeing this one for awhile:

The torrified curly Hard Maple on the back/sides and neck are all from the same board. I'm excited to see this light up under finish. With a wipe of Naptha thinner we have an indicator of what's in store:

Thanks for following along!

Mark, is torrified figured wood more stable dimensionally over time? Beautiful guitar.

I love it when necks are highly figured and you have really complemented the flamed Maple with your cross-grained center strip (and subtle purfling). Well done, Mark!

Why don't we see more flamed (or quilted) necks, Mark? Is it a matter of cost? Of stability? Of the figure being harder to work?

Thanks Treenewt! and no problem having it match up with the body because it's all from the same board.

Thanks Nemoman, It has some great color you wouldn't normally see in Maple and it is wonderfully resonate.

From what I've read is the process increases stability and that makes sense to me as it is also supposed to accelerate the aging process. I love old woods for their tone and stability so I was eager to cut up one of these torrified boards and fold it into a guitar!

Thanks Erithon! A lot of figure can cut down on stiffness so it is something to pay attention too. I wouldn't do a Soft Maple neck with this much figure in it. Fortunately being torrified Hard Maple helps with the stiffness. I was concerned it may be too brittle but I got over that when I easily bent the sides.

Default Dots

I've taken to making my own marker dots. I have an extensive shell collection so I want to make my own. I can make any size I want and like resawing my own wood it allows me to better select just where I want to cut.

I'm working on my Mahogany Woodsman and decided I want to have gold fret markers and while I'm at it I want 1/8th" dots instead of the usual 3/32nds".

I'm still working out the bugs in my technique so I cut a bunch of extras. In the end it all worked out well:

Like always fantastic work, the back looks so clean that the possibly of not binding it comes to mind. Has that ever been a consideration on any of your builds?
