Bob means a second coat in one day, and There was one the day before as well, so a third coat. It is unusual to have a coat put on Barely before noon dry to sand-able before the end of the day. Warm weather and low humidity, but not that low. The picture of the back, above, Has been sanded to receive that second coat.

This is looking complex and elegant under finish.

Default Sixth Coat...

Bruce was kind enough to take the body outside after applying the sixth coat of oil varnish today so you can get a sense of the guitar’s color and figure. The Red Spruce top is really quite special aesthetically. Bruce thinks this is the final coat on the top. Definitely AAA grade top, back when that use to mean something...

Now that there are six coats of oil varnish applied to the Oregon Myrtle back and sides, the enhanced golden tinting from the Pernambuco stain and tannin reaction from the ammonia have brought out the best of the figure from the set. The back and sides likely will need another coat or two of oil varnish.

After tomorrow, the guitar will begin its four week curing period while Bruce completes Tad’s Swiss Spruce/Madagascar Rosewood JB-15 and he works on the Red Spruce/Madrone Flamenco guitar.

Now we can see that Bob is chomping at the bit, as he has divided 30 by 3 and gotten 7! 4 would be closer . . . It is true that I blocked and buffed the varnish on CN#2 in only 3 weeks, but that was an experiment I allowed as there was no customer on the horizon. Still isn't, by the way, if any one is interested in a very nice BRW/Polish spruce 00. I can't keep my hands off it.

I think that's the best looking set of Oregon Myrtle I have ever seen. The pernambuco stain really makes it glow. Very nice.

Speaking of couch noodlers, I have it on good authority that CN#1 - the Snakewood guitar - is a little miracle. Lo verily, it is said that angels sing every time it is played. There are caravansarais and other places where pilgrims gather and rumors abound, where reckless souls have been known to claim it is the finest little 00 ever made. Crazy talk.

Glad to hear that...

Three “wows” should hold the thread while the oil varnish cures until the first week of July when Bruce will return his attention to the project.... In the meantime, Bruce is building a stunner of a Red Spruce / Madrone Flamenco guitar and finishing up Tad’s Swiss Spruce / Madagascar Rosewood JB-15 in the “Sexauer 2020” thread.

Default Patience

Tomorrow will be 31 days since Bruce applied the final coat of oil varnish to the body and neck. The finish has polymerized and hardened to a point where it is now ready to safely buff and assemble in between oil varnishing Jmat’s beautiful FT-000...
