Cool HEINONEN SJ Cedar/Pomelle Sapele for The Golden Era Guitar

With all the attention that T. Drew Heinonen has been generating with his guitars currently, it is with great pleasure that I present to you one of our latest guitars ordered for the shop!

For those of you who do not know of him:
Drew Heinonen reigns from an incredibly impressive background. He was among the very best to have apprenticed under Dana Bourgeois of Bourgeois Guitars, followed by a 2 year apprenticeship under renowned luthier, Jim Olson of Olson Guitars. His guitars are reminiscent of his latest mentor - a great homage to the legendary Jim Olson and what a way to keep his name alive even after Jim's imminent retirement.

Drew's base price is still extremely affordable for the time being and we expect it to take off soon with all the interest and orders we have been getting for his guitars. His waiting list is about to get even longer too! If you would like reserve a favourable spot on his build list with us, you can reach me via PM, our website, email ([email protected]) or WhatsApp (+65 8666 0420).

Without further ado, here is some information on the specs of the latest beauty we have coming to our store:

Heinonen SJ Cedar/Pomelle Sapele w/ a "41 style" appointment and "Olson Doves":

Model: Heinonen SJ
Top: Cedar
Back/Sides: Pomelle Sapele
Upper bout width: 11 1/8"
Lower bout width: 15 1/16"
Lower bout depth: 4 3/4"
Scale length: 25.34"
Body length: 19 3/8"
Nut width: 1.75"
Saddle width: 2 5/16”
Rosette: Radial Cut w/ Paua
Fretboard: Ebony w/ "Olson Doves"
Binding: Dark Wood
Purfling: Paua
Bridge: Ebony
Tuners: Gotoh 510's
Fret wire: EVO Gold
Case: Cedar Creek

Our aim was to build a stunning first guitar for the shop and what better to make a statement than to go with an incredibly famous guitar like the Olson #1500 Cedar/"The Tree" Quilted Mahogany:

We do not want to think about how much this particular Olson sold for, but with the inspiration of such an trademark milestone guitar and the desire to make it more accessible price-wise, we decided to go for an alternative for "The Tree", which was Pomelle/Quilted Sapele. The obvious differences would be the choice of B/S, a different headstock, a thinner rosette, and "Olson Doves" for the fretboard.

Here is the gorgeous set of Pomelle Sapele selected:

And here is the perfect set of light Cedar next to the back:

Stay tuned for more drool-worthy photos

Very cool project. I think we need to hijack a molecular botanist and find out why this figuring is relatively common in sapele but not in mahogany. If we could only isolate the gene, we could make it better, stronger, faster.

Sounds like you hold the secret to the future of guitars. This is actually 100% possible, but I don't think scientists see the value of such work unfortunately (or fortunately). Once my dealership takes off, this is where I'm headed!

That Pomelle Sapele is really pretty. Matthew is onto something. We need to find someone with access to the right genetic tools to help us create some GMO Mahogany. "Tree2" - brought to you by the AGF.

I’m starting to prefer the dark brown sapele quilt, the orange “Tree”mahogany is just a bit too orangey for my taste

Sounds like you are going to have to start increasing the membership premiums to fund this project

"The Tree" isn't actually very orange in person, it's just reflected that way in photos. It is actually quite a dark brown/orange, similar to quilted sapele
