Congrats Rick, I know you waited a long time for this with a wedding to handle in between. I am glad the guitar has made it to the top of the to do list.

As a pretty sappy guy myself, the story of your friend and the mahogany was worth the price of admission.

I will be following along for sure. All the best.

No kidding. A checkbook and a credit card! Indeed. And a dear friend to remember. I bet a song about him comes right out of this soundhole pretty quick!!

Cool story, cool wood, and a fun thread to follow.

Enjoy the ride!!!

Isn't this cool! I also am having an F-SJ-45 build going on right now with Dale. I don't know how far along it is exactly, but I think just in early stages like yours! So I'll be following along closely. Pretty much the same specs, but no arm bevel, and I didn't have a piece of 100 year old mahogany to part with. It was hearing Justonwo describe his that made me pull the trigger on this about 18 months ago. I feel like I'm in good company now! I told Dale I wanted it to be just like the one in the short video on the North American Guitars website. That one is a beauty!

Default Thicknessing continues

Dale sent me some more pictures of the mahogany being thicknessed and joined. It’s always fun to see the big machines do in moments what would take hours in a small shop. When I first met Dale, he was working out of a 20x20 garage and had everything stored neatly in every nook or crevice that could be found. What a change!

Dale sent this photo as a comparison. My mahogany is on the left and a new piece of mahogany is on the right. Wowza!

Tom - thanks so much for the good wishes. Best of all, I got Kathy’s seal of approval!

Nice story to go along with this guitar build. Congratulations on coming into this set of wood, I would imagine there are not to many solid mahogany table tops out there to find, most being veneer. I love the dark color of this set. I can't wait for the final photos of this one.

Default Getting Bent

I’m always amazed at how the bending process works. The first time I saw a bending machine, it was a computer controlled, thermal blanket, thermal sensored piece of custom machinery at the Guild guitar shop in New Hartford, Ct. and yet, luthiers have been bending wood over hot pipes, and in boiling water\steam for centuries.

From Dale - "Sometimes with salvage wood, it’ll split when bending, or other nasty surprises will pop up. This went beautifully."

My comment - "phewwww!!!"

This is getting very exciting. I almost want to take a trip up to Burlington and just sit and watch everything, even the glue drying!

I asked Dale to save the cutout. BTW, if you ever tour the Martin factory, that’s one of the neat goodies you get to take home. Martin cuts a lot of soundholes each year! They make great coasters, etc.

This sounds very, very cool. I can't wait to see what you come up with here!

Great idea and great project! Dale makes amazing guitars. Based on JT’s 43! Make sure he accounts for the tone-sapping effects of John Thomas’s wet blanket personality when he voices it. It should sound a lot better that way. I had him do that with my JT 43 replica and it turned out great.

Alas, as is too often the case, WoeIsJuston is wrong. At my recommendation, having unfortunately met Juston in person, I advised Dale to rub Juston's guitar with a blanket wet with fire retardant solution as a defense against Juston's caustic personality.

As Juston has correctly (!) pointed out, the results are excellent.
