Default Help The Grandpa II

So I finally got a usable recording with my classical and vocal into the cushions at 2’ with my voice recorder app on iPhone. The grandson and I are sharing musical efforts this way.
So next experiment:
Can I buy a guitar to USB cable and run it into a USB to lightning dongle and into my iPhone?

AND...where does the digital conversion happen? In the Voice recorder or garage band app, or does something happen in the cable? I assume that it is in the software.
Thanks

The conversion happens in the phone. It’d no different than speaking into the phone. That signal has to be converted to digital also.

One other thing to note is if you plug your guitar into the phone as you discussed above, the phone mic will automatically disable when the guitar is connected. This means you won’t be able to record vocals and guitar at the same time.

Could you use that with the quarter inch jack coming out of a mixer and then into the lightning converter and then into the phone?

I might use a 1/4 “Y” to put two 1/4 into the 1/4 to USB. Mostly I am just playing around.
Thanks again
