Default Share Your Explorers

Gibson Original Collection..always wanted one and when the OC included it in the series that was it. It's beyond fun, and a great playing and sounding guitar. You can actually go tent camping with the case Looking forward to hearing your Explorer story!

I had one back in the 80’s. It’s on my list of regrets…. Wish I still had it.

i'd think a high percentage of pickers are in that group with you! I have an acoustic that haunts me and i imagine the day i see it on Reverb, prob not going to happen!

If you get another we'd love to see it!

I used to have the Epiphone version where the body was pieced around a chromyte core I think.
That body shape is very comfortable to play standing...
Congrats!

So…. I sold it back in the nineties. Then a few years ago someone from across the country contacted me and asked me about it. They had bought it and found my name written somewhere in the case. Bitter sweet seeing it again!!! They wouldn’t sell it to me.. ha.

That’s very cool, Dale. I considered one of those back in the day but never flipped the switch. Between that and the Flying V, Gibson led the pack with interesting guitar shapes early on. Plus one other model whose name escapes me…big slab body with a huge headstock,,,,

You’re right, the cases are huge!

Dale, what a wonderful Explorer! What pickups?

I love my Gibson electrics but I still don't have a Gibby Explorer. I do have an Epi Prophecy with an EMG-81 in the bridge. I'll have to take a new pic tomorrow and post it here.

Lovely!

I've got a story about going to see Wishbone Ash. I'll make it short. The lead vocalista and guitarist for opening act, a horrible southern rock thing, played an Explorer that taught me that average-height middle-aged guys like me who have a gut, which I had back then, should never play an explorer and act sexy. The Explorer can be sexy, but it'll show off, and show up, the gut.

How does the Explorer feel and balance?

I'm more accustomed to "traditional" shapes, and have had a go with a V that was quite manageable both standing and sitting. I've heard that Firebirds can be neck heavy, depending on strap arrangements.

I think they are very well balanced sitting and standing - i was surprised honestly. The fretboard is very accessible as well. Granted we all sit/stand and prefer our guitars to feel a certain way that we like - but i've started this post on other forums and its the same comments over and over - tremendously comfortable guitar to play.

I wear my guitars higher than most but you can see how well the pickups and neck hit you with a strap.
