Mixed Tensions anyone?
I've been a fan of normal tensions for a while now. My left hand never really liked high tension strings, especially the bass strings.
Coming from years of steel string playing, I prefer carbon trebles and hate the feel of almost all nylon strings. But I periodically struggled with the occasional 1st string sliding off the fret board due to my technique and their flexibility. I just tried using high tension trebles with normal tension bass strings (Savarez Cantiga normal tension bass with high tension Oasis carbons) WOW, I'm in love with the sound, feel and haven't experienced any issues.. Thank goodness, I can order separate bass and treble sets... LOL

I have the same set up on my Orchestra Fusion right now. Really liked it from the start, but now, about 4 weeks in averaging 2-3 hrs. a day, I think they sound even better. It's the kind of tone that makes one reluctant to put the guitar down when either time or stamina have run out.

High tension carbon trebles typically have about the same tension as normal basses.

I had a full set of Hannabach medium tension strings until a recommendation from SirWhale led me to try Knobloch CXs. It was a great recommendation because the trebles are much brighter and clearer. (Thanks SirWhale!
I didn't see much difference with Knobloch basses and went back to the Hannabach basses. So, I currently have Knobloch CX med-high trebles and Hannabach medium tension basses. I like this combination quite well, but plan to try out the Aquila Rubino trebles soon (based on SirWhale's recent review) |
