Default Collings OM SHOOTOUT

Hi guys, in about a week I will have four Collings OMs in my possession (a fifth coming in September). I'd like to only keep 2 of them so will be doing a shootout that I of course would love to share with you guys.

So my question is what is the best way to record this shootout?

I'm a recording rookie, so any tips around mic placement, preamp settings, post-processing, or even what room in my house I should use would be greatly appreciated. I already have a factory matched pair of these: http://www.oktava-online.com/mk012.htm and an m-audio preamp that I can plug into my Mac (using Garageband).

The guitars:
2005 OM1A SS SB
2008 OM2HA (for sale)
2012 OM1
2012 OM2HG SB
2013 OM1A SS Varnish (coming in September)

Thanks,
Alex

This is something you really just need to experiment with. Some rooms in your house will sound better than others. I've found that slightly larger, well furnished rooms tend to work well and smaller rooms tend to not work as well. This is a generalization, of course.

You could use a bunch of mic set ups but I think a spaced pair or XY would probably be your best bet. Spaced and closer to the guitar if you're going to be using a smaller room and XY and farther out if you're going to be using a larger room. The XY will get a smaller image and a slightly more...natural? sound.

You do need to just experiment though.

I agree that an X-Y arrangement aimed at the 12th and a set distance (10" or so) from the fretboard will offer a reasonably consistent way to compare the guitars.

Hey, Alex,

Are you enjoying those Collings guitars yet? I look forward to the recordings.
