Default Need help understanding something

My youngest son who is in Boston at college has asked that I buy him a Bias Professional Amp or a Reason 9. I have read a bit about them but have no experience. Can anyone help me understand these products and and differences between them?

They're both software.

One is a guitar amp emulation. You plug in your guitar and it (allegedly) sounds just like a real amp with its tubes and transformers.

The other is for recording multi-track audio - a recording studio on the computer. Pretty much all audio production is done on computers these days.
