Can't Catch Me by Chuck Berry
This is my arrangement of Chuck Berry's 'You Can't Catch Me', featuring Sal Devitto on drums, and the late Ivan Elias on bass. Yes, that's me actually flat picking the solo on a 1930 Gibson L-5, and the slide on a Telecaster through a Dyna Comp doing my best Lowell George! I did the fingerpicking track on a 1954 Martin 00-18.
Enjoy! https://soundcloud.com/howard-emerson/cant-catch-me Howard Emerson |

Hi Marty,
Aside from the 2 arrangements of Chuck Berry songs, my primary focus has always been on composing for fingerstyle & bottleneck guitar, with a full measure of country blues, R&B, and R&R influences. That my list of favorite drummers & bass players is longer than favorite guitar players should give a clue to my strong suit. Todd Hallawell & Bob Evans (both Winfield Fingerpicking Champs) have covered my compositions, and that's the kind of thing I really like! Glad you enjoyed it! Howard |

Howard,
That is just great! I don't remember hearing this one before! Wonderful! Some of the slide work you are doing on the Telecaster almost sounds like a steel guitar... Very cool! The flat picking on the L is aweseome! - Glenn

Very nice, Howard!
Funny, I just wrote a comment on "Maybelline" saying you could easily segue from that into this one... then I scroll down a bit and here it is... Certainly one of my top 5 Chuck Berry songs, this one... maybe even top three, along with "The Promised Land" and "C'est La Vie"... Nice work...

I've never released it, although I did consider including it in my new CD, but maybe next time. There is so much compression on the Telecaster that it does have a steel guitar sort of aura to it. It's an MXR Dyna Comp, the favorite of Lowell George & Bonnie Raitt. I still don't know how I was able to hold on to the flat pick while doing that solo, and I certainly can't do it anymore, but at the time I KNEW it was exactly what the track needed! Glad you enjoyed it. Howard |

I've enjoyed both tracks tremendously, and I hope you don't mind that I've shared with my Facebook friends. Thoroughly great job on arranging, playing, recording, and singing.

Where do you think I got the wrong lyrics from? Danny Kalb. I got corrected by Bobby Nathan when I played it for him at Sam Ash 48th St. Nobody ever used the word 'Jitney' in a song. Glad you enjoyed it! Howard |
