Default Dion Guitars 2020/2021 around the shop

Hello forum folks,

I haven’t been posting lately as I found it a little overwhelming to keep up with separate threads for each instruments. I value this community, both the builders and the enthusiast so I’d like to figure out a way to continue to contribute content.

I’ve decided that I will run a thread of general shop activities. Those who follow along will end up seeing parts of the construction of most of the guitars I produce throughout the year.

Some of the guitars are for dealers, some direct clients. Please feel free to contact me if you’d like more information on any of these instruments or my work in general.

Thanks for following along and thanks for making this an inspiring place!

Cocobolo

More Cocobolo

Italian Spruce for above cocobolo

Ebano fingerboard and head veneer for above cocobolo/Italian

Above cocobolo no alcohol

Plum figure mahogany

With alcohol

Italian spruce soundboard for figured mahogany

Multiple piece, carbon fibre reinforced, end-grain ironwood mosaic fingerboard. (That’s a mouth full!) for above mahogany/Italian

Shots from the shop last week

Thanks Paul! I think I owe half of my career to that window and the lovely photos it facilitates.

Dion, I follow your work on instagram, but love seeing you here as well. There is a very cool thread of elegant simplicity that seems to run through your shop into your instruments. Absolutely gorgeous work, and nice job carrying that thread into your photos as well.

Thanks for the kind words!

I guess it’s an honest aesthetic sense, as it seems to come through in everything I do.

Do you have any guitars made by folks in the forum?

Default Dion Guitars 2020/2021 around the shop

There was a lot of forward movement in the shop this week, not much of it very photogenic. Here are a couple photos from the moments between the dust.

A light coat of shellac on the Italian spruce soundboard. You’ll notice the inlaid Ebano X-brace cap.

Before final cleanup:

After the shellac:

I love the clean look of your sides, very sleek.

Do the kerfs on the linings run all the way across the width of the sides?

Hey folks, hope y’all are doing well.

Here a few photos from the last week or so in the shop.

Englemann/cocobolo

This one’s mahogany from top to bottom with the exception of the fingerboard and bridge which will be Indian rosewood

I’ve lined the structured sides and brace-less hollow core back with very thin and very beautiful floral patterned paper. It was a real pain, three days work to apply cleanly. I used hide glue to adhere the paper and gave it a light coat of shellac.

Dion, shop and builds look amazing. I love the beautiful simplicity and lines on your guitars. Playing my No. 4 in Birdseye maple tonight in open g and it sounds absolutely amazing. Such a cannon and so fun to play. To all reading this you owe it to yourself to play one of Dion’s guitars. He is an absolutely phenomenal up and coming builder!

Hello forum folks.

I don’t seem to spend much time here these days, thought I stop in!

Here’s a little photo dump of a few guitars, all of which are now off for finish. New projects are in the works, photos soon.

Hope everyone’s doing well,

Dion

James, this is just incredible work. Truly incredible. I don’t know how I missed the original post last year, but Wow. I have admired your extremely clean designs for a while, but things like that Ironwood fingerboard, just amazing! Hope to visit the shop one day. All best, Richard

Smile Sweet Stuff

I, too, really like that ironwood fingerboard and Headstock overlay.

All the axes are looking very NICE indeed.

Thanks for sharing here, as I shun most other online stuff!

Salud
