Default Your Song cover

When I first heard this song, I was maybe nine or ten. Overnight I went from hating piano lessons to wanting to be a musician for the rest of my life!

Great playing and singing. Really enjoyable interpretation of this standard. Well done.

That was very good - you felt the lyrics and your playing was solid. Well done, sir.

Very nice arrangement. John and Taupin's sense of melody is timeless. Now "Tiny Dancer"?

The “dad voice” sound in that key bugged me, so I reworked the arrangement a step higher (D instead of C).

I think this one sounds better. Good on you for always trying to improve. Sometimes I just say, "Meh, good enough." and that's a terrible attitude toward being a student of anything.

Thanks for that. Yeah, I always try to be my own Simon Cowell. I did a few other things different as well. The guitar sound is being picked up by the mic mounted in the pickup.

The vocal is my trusty SM7B and FetHead, but from a greater distance than this mic is normally used. The advantage of the SM7B over a condenser is that, being a dynamic, the sound falls off quicker and you get less of the room ambience. This is a good thing when you are singing in an untreated room and don’t want to hear that in the recording. That is why you always see SM7B mics really close to people’s mouths. I quite like the sound at this distance though. You can see my face and it still seems to eliminate the room reflections.

The big thing is the higher key though.

Listened (watched) both and prefer #2. The higher key suits the song and your voice better. Good job!

I’ve been going through a lot of my repertoire and raising keys. As I sing more, I have more range than I started with.
