Sutherland Octave Mandolin
Tony Sutherland guitar bodied octave mandolin,
Koa b&s, Spruce top, Koa neck, Ebony fingerboard, bridge & body binding, sold brass tailpiece. this is a flat-top instrument with floating bridge & tailpiece scale length is 23", fingerboard width at the nut is 1.6" string spacing at the bridge is 1.8", string height at the 12th fret is 1/16+ at the bass G strings 1/16" at the treble E strings. Tony Sutherland is a guitar/mandolin builder who lived in New Mexico for a number of years, he collaborated often with Stephen Owsley Smith who was also in New Mexice and later Hawaii. Both gentlemen are "off the grid", no longer have web sites or appear to be currently building instruments. This Sutherland Octave Mandolin was built by Tony, using a body shape created by Stephen, the fingerboard inlay was based on a "stock" inlay pattern that Stephen used on his insstruments, the soundhole resette was of Tony's design, this instrument was the top raffle prize at Zoukfest 2003 Some information on both gentlemen can be found on The Mandolin Cafe in the CBOM section.
