Mac Trashcan no longer goes to latest OS
So those who use Apple products know what I mean about the "trashcan" circa 2013 Mac. I've been using this for only 4 years now and keeping it updated. But today I found out that it can not be updated to the latest MacOS Ventura. I am running Version 12.6.1 of Monterey and so far that has been fine. I am recording with Digital Performer and even that is working great.
So maybe it's time to start thinking of updating my computer, to maybe a new MacStudio. Not sure if I really need to do this, but maybe this is how one gets pushed out of a computer that is working fine to a newer model.

I suspect you can continue to use your 2013 Mac with Monterey for several years to come. Just lock it down in terms of updating apps, etc.

Plenty of commercial studios stay well behind the curve on OS updates. You could just run that system until it no longer serves you & then update.
The problems come if you also use that as your everyday computer. Then you tend to need to be a little more current for other software.

Yup, if you treat it as a recording appliance, and keep using the software you currently use, there's no need to stay currant.
If you want new features in newer software, or want security fixes if you use it as a general Internet connected computer, then you may face the issue. The Mac in my studio space is several versions back. The only issue I have is that I can only "up-convert" Logic sessions from there to my home office "studio B" Mac running the current version of Logic, and can't directly port the up-converted session back to do more live tracking in the studio space. I work around that. Eventually the temptations of new software features in updates or new products will likely force my hand.

There have been times I've been 2-3 years behind on OS updates. If your daw or plugins don't absolutely need the OS to be updated, just leave it as it is.

I will simply add my voice to the chorus
(Unless) you specifically need Ventura to run some critical app you use Then it will likely serve you just fine .. I ran my late 2010 Mac Pro until Nov 2020 and honestly I could actually still be on it on Catalina

Yeah, just stay where you are if you can.
I'm still on Big Sur on my [newer recording, upstairs] iMac. The Mini I'm on right now, which I could still use for recording, is on Monterrey because I can't move to [all 64-bit] Catalina without leaving my Office 11 product behind, and I don't see any need to move on at this point, since it does everything I need.

This is a genuine annoyance. Money fixes everything; I can always a) buy a brand new computer for both work and my recording hobby or b) have a dedicated recording computer and stop updating it.
After a few years I’d need to update no matter what. There will always be new versions of the DAW or Melodyne or Superior Drummer.

Connectivity has improved a lot since Apple designed the 6,1 Mac Pro. It would be nice to have an interface connection that allows using it's full bandwidth. So I'm thinking about pulling the trigger on a Mac Studio this winter. Not sure which model I'll choose. Last edited by Al Acuff; 12-09-2022 at 10:32 AM. |
