Thanks I have a shop/music teaching place near me I'll ask them if they take strings back.
I have been putting my old strings in tin cans for a long time now and nobody's told me off about it yet, though it might make more sense if I just saved them up till it's worth making a trip to the recycling centre where I take garden waste, they have a general metals bin there.

For years and dozens of string changes I was a measure, cut and wind guy but I had an 6th string unravel on me not to long ago before I could wind so now I'm a thread, wind and cut guy. It's slightly less efficient but I can still change strings on a paddle head guitar in less than 10 minutes.
