Would this be considered a downgrade or a upgrade?
Hello,
Thinking about trading my Taylor 110 for a Yamaha FG830. The Taylors tone is starting to sound bland and I enjoyed the tone of the Yamaha. What do you all think?

I’d want some cash in that deal.

If you are playing one guitar and then find another guitar that makes your ears and hands happier and more satisfied, then it is an upgrade in my humble opinion. Marketing-wise, monetary-value-wise, I still think you would be ahead. Yamaha's have a great reputation.

Dollars-wise, it's a step down.
Are you trading a used Taylor for a new Yamaha? You'd be better off selling the Taylor and then buying a used Yamaha of that model. You'd probably pocket an extra $150-$200 if the market on Reverb.com is correct. The cheapest Taylor 110 is going for $430. The cheapest Yamaha FG830 is going for about $250 I wouldn't trade, but that's just me unless a specific Yamaha is REALLY speaking to you....like....$200's worth. If it's a person you are trading with, if you did the trade and they gave you about $120, that would be ok. $150 would be better. It all depends on how much you like that guitar. |

Let's first compare price. A NEW 110 costs around $700 and sells used for around $400. A FG830 sells NEW for about $300. There are a few used FG830's on the market for $200. For me TRADING would be out of the question unless additional cash were involved. If you go for the trade I wouldn't advise doing it for less than and additioanl $200 on top of the trade-for a new or used 830. But, I think if you're talking about trading your used 110 for a NEW 830, I'd advise passing. Keep your 110 and buy a used 830... Or better yet... Sell the 110 and buy an even better guitar.
One more thing... At the price levels of 110's and FG830's the consistency isn't going to be quite the same as an upper level guitar- and even those swing wildly. Make sure, whatever you do, whatever you buy, whenver you buy it, you're making a deal on that individual instrument, not just some model. Good luck.

FYI, the 110 is a 2010 non-electronic version, and would be trading at a GC for a new FG830.

I'm not trying to talk you out of buying a new guitar, but have you thought about trying different strings and picks? It's a cheap experiment that could make your Taylor sound new and exciting.

Not an upgrade, but it sounds like a good trade, especially since you prefer the tone of the guitar you'd be trading for.

Make sure you are ok with the tight string spacing at the saddle on the Yamaha's. I played one and that bothered me. If it's going to be your only acoustic, it's probably something you'll get used to, but it makes it difficult to switch to other guitars with a more standard spacing.

My first thought as well. If your Taylor is beginning to sound "bland", the guitar hasn't changed so either your taste has changed, the humidity is high and your guitar is too wet or the strings need to be refreshed - or a combination of all 3. Unless you are simply bored with the Taylor and you just want a change.

If the Taylor is over humidified it will also sound lackluster. My personal 110 is a heck of a guitar. But along the same lines as you, I had a guitar that would all of a sudden sound bad to me. Every time I’d get the notion to sell it down the line. Then, I’d change the strings, and the guitar I remembered came back.

This. The cheapest 110 is currently $400 on Reverb. The GC price on a new FG830 is $300. GC gives 60% trade value for the averaged sales of guitars on Ebay. If the average sale was $400 for the 110's (it's actually a little higher) your trade value would be $240. You're getting $300. So as Bufflehead said - it's a good trade. Some people sell through commission which I feel is a bad deal. Some take the time and sell privately then buy another guitar - that takes time you may not want to take. Therefore, the other solution is to make a trade and save time and headache. If you're okay with the trade, that's all that matters. I would probably do it if I wanted that Yamaha. Good luck.

No way I'd make that trade. Sell the 110, buy an FG used for 175-200 bucks and pocket the cash.
