Ditto on Guild jumbo's. '84 F50R Westerley here. Deep, beautiful, resonate tone. You hear the term "piano like". This is it, imho. Every Westerley I've played I wanted to take home.

I have two Westerly built dreads from the late 90's. I really like them both. I must admit that I am not the best person to ask about sound and build quality or playability because I am also influenced by brand name and looks. They both sound, play and look very good as far as I'm concerned. How do they compare to every other guitar on the planet? Some are better, and some are worse.

I had a Guild jumbo 12 string and it was one of the most beautiful sounding guitars I've ever owned. It was a fiddleback maple model and was georgeous to look at too. I debated for a year about selling it. Because of physical issues I could not play it for more than 10 minutes at time. It hurt to play for any longer as Guild jumbos are big guitars and my shoulder could not take the pain. I finally and reluctantly did sell it. I hated to do it. Great guitar as many of the Guilds are.

They are horrible guitars and nobody should buy them! (Except me. Best kept value) I say that in complete jest and they are really great as I stated earlier.

Guild has moved across the country and back over the years. While they were in Corona Ca. Guild tried a different kind of neck joint on a new model of guitar. The results were that some of these guitars didn't make the grade and the new line was brought to an end. With this small exception, Guild built great guitars where ever they were produced. Because Guild used so many different manufacturing plants across the country, some people have a favorite era/plant. Guild had it's longest production run in Westerly RI so it is only logical that this is where many people place their loyalty. The truth is that no matter where Guild Guitars were made, they were made well and sound great. While it's true that new Guilds are priced up there with Martin and Taylor. so is their quality. You get what you pay for.

While the jumbo 12s are most well known, the smaller guitars are great as well. I have a New Hartford built F-30 std. (OM, hog back and sides). Like it a lot.

Also the all solid guitars in their import line represent very good value per dollar, IMO.

Still own the 1971 D-55 -the best guitar i ever played -a stellar guitar , alot of my Martin friends use to make fun of guild's until they heard my D-55 . I also own a 1978 D-25 - both guitars have a Brazilian rosewood bridge ( Both a great sounding guitar ) in years past I also use to own two different D-40's -those were my gigging guitars . From what ive seen Corboda's goal is to bring back Guild Quality and sound before Fender ran it into the ground . Very happy about Cordoba buying Guild !

I had a Ren-designed Orpheum 12 fret slope dread that was a great guitar. I reluctantly sold it because I couldn't get along with the beefy & wide neck. Still miss it.

Yes, I'm a huge Guild fan, own several.
Here's a video that encapsulates Guild. He's playing a D50.

I will never forget a vintage Guild I played 25 years ago at Cowboy Star Guitar Emporium. The proprietor mentioned it to me. A nondescript, scratched up, Sitka/Mah that was selling for $400. it was a small body with a glorious voice. But I didn't have $400. Someone scored a special acoustic back then.
I also owned a small - but deep body, 12 fret, 12 string from the 80's that I should have kept. Lush tone and an easy player. |
