Default Unanticipated surprise !

Ed has decided to build this one with horse hide glue (HHG). Have been having Mr. Ed (the horse not Mr. Ed Bond) nightmares since he told me but an unexpected and welcome addition to the build.

Default Here we go

The Paduak for this build is flamed and figured and a one of a kind upgrade. A such, Ed can't afford to break it during bending. As such, this is a shot of the sides, one having soaked in a bending solution for 24 hours to reduce break risk. Sorry for double images. Not sure how to correct that.

All the best to Ed and yourself! I just went through this myself not too long ago and it is quite nerve wrecking!! I am sure it will bend just fine Loving the figure, really nice.

Default Got em bent with minimal trauma

With a little luck and a lot of preparation and patience, Ed and Ryan got the sides of Paduak bent without breaking. That is a big hurdle and relief.

Onward and upward !

I'm fairly certain the Supersoft saved the day. There's a few spots in the upper bouts where it 'kinked' instead of bent, due to the localized runout that is the nature of flamed wood. But not so much that it won't sand smooth...

How was the spring back? I have some padauk and I am wondering what is the best way to bend it. The Supersoft would run about $50 to get shipped to me so I am looking for any tips I can get.

Default A plethora of woods for bling and structure

So the back of this beauty will have a wedge of flamed maple, with bindings and 4-vs 5 piece neck laminate in same. Here are slabs of the maple pre cut and some slices off them.

Spanish cedar for linings

Baltic birch for neck block extension

Default Neck block extension/tumb beam construction details

Per Ed: Adding a neck block extension. The Baltic birch block extends to the thumb beam and butts right up against it. Glued down and tacked in with dowels

Default More forward progress

Per Ed:

Like so!

Pile of Spanish cedar strips for linings and side braces, which came from the edge of a neck blank plank...

Now it goes aside for a few days while we catch up on a few things, and while I figure out how to make the linings do what I want...

Default Joining the three piece back with HHG

Per Ed:

"Three piece back and hide glue, eh?

Once we decided on the orientation of the panels to get the best match to the sides, I carefully jointed all edges, checking against a strong background light for any gaps.

I put tape on the seams to keep everything in place once the glue went into the joints. Set the timer, took a deep breath, then swiftly set to getting the glue where it needed to be and getting the wedges and clamps in place before the timer went off one minute later.

Probably would have been less stressful to do it over two days, but...that's the beauty of hide glue. If it doesn't stick the first time, just heat it up and try again.

However, I feel pretty confident that it went just right. Hopefully I don't eat those words for breaky...smile emoticon"

Ed: That is lovely looking Padauk.Just strung up a small j-185 this week. Padauk is one of my favorite woods, works nice and sounds good. I also use supersoft but not just on hard to bend woods, I use it on every thing. Also when bending Padauk I use quite a bit of heat. I don't measure so can't quote an exact figure. That going to be a pretty guitar.
Tom
Guess this is not Ed's thread but the words are still valid. Congrats John.

Hi Tom,

Yeah, SSII has become standard procedure. It can't hurt, after all...

Thanks Tom. No worries. Nice to get a post other than mine or Ed's.
