Default 2015 AGF Guitar of the Year Kostal OMC Straight Grain Brazilian w/ Brazilian Bridge

This guitar probably needs little introduction since it has more than 94,000 views on the custom shop. Up for sale is one of my favorite guitars made by Jason Kostal. I commissioned this guitar before I had two children and now we have two growing kids and the family needs some funds. Believe me, I'd love to keep this one, especially since the Brazilian is the straightest I've seen and almost impossible to get like this anymore! The tone on this guitar is unbelievably multi dimensional and has the most beautiful musical nuances.

Jason Kostal was Ervin Somogyi's longest apprentice and one of the most highly sought after Somogyi apprentice luthiers. If you commissioned this guitar BRAND NEW today, it would be $30,550! The breakdown (from his recent pricing): Base Price $18,000, plus $9,000 Brazilian Rosewood upcharge, $500 German Spruce, $500 backstrip, $350 two-tone headstock, $450 decorative end graft, $100 Gotoh gold tuners w/ebony buttons, $700 Florentine cutaway, $750 Wedge, $200 Brazilian Rosewood Bridge. I've also added a K&K pickup and a DPA mic ($400) for an extremely transparent plugged in sound.

This guitar is as new as it gets and in MINT condition. I only play it at home and have brought it to church a handful of times. No dents or dings whatsoever and nitro finish is exactly the same as I received it back in 2015. Always stored in humidity controlled guitar room at 45 percent relative humidity.

The fun part of commission this guitar was flying out to Ervin Somogyi's shop when I commissioned my first Kostal (Jason was still apprenticing for Ervin). I picked out two sets of wood and this piece of Brazilian was the straightest and rang the clearest when tapped. Truly a special peice of wood and extremely musical when playing it.

Guitar is truly remarkable in every way. When people say that some guitars are just more musical than others, this one definitely falls in that category!

Asking $23k obo. I am entertaining any reasonable offer or even potential trades. Let's talk!

Eric, guitar is gorgeous and I bet it sounds even more amazing. I absolutely love straight grained brazilian. The best that money can buy. Very tempting indeed! All the best to you and your family.

This guitar was my favorite out of your collection, man. So “open” and crazy responsive...feel fortunate to have played it for a few minutes. New owner will be thrilled.

Dustin, I hate to see it go, but the family needs to raise some funds. Here is the video of you playing it. But you make all guitars sound great!

I played this one around Thanksgiving last year, and it is absolutely stellar. If you live the Ackerman/Winston Early Wyndham Hill recordings, then this will do some eerie spooky modern sounds, more like a lightning rod that you are channeling than an instrument sitting in your lap getting plucked. You all know when a guitar becomes an extension of yourself. Prepare for that experience!

What a gorgeous guitar! A set of BRW like that just soooo hard to find. Jason builds a special instrument. None like it! GLWS

Eric,
Don't mean to divert your thread in any way but I was wondering if the tablature for Asherby might be available for purchase someplace ? It is almost as beautiful as the Kostal !

Thanks, GLWTS

Best if luck with the sale. The basses on his guitars are unlike any others I have heard. Crisp and resonant with just the right amount of overtones. I became a fan 2 seconds after I strummed a Jumbo of his for the first time. Truly exceptional instruments.

Thanks Dave! I believe your Kostal is on of the funnest! I have two other Kostal 12 frets and they are all tone monsters!

WOw Eric,

This is haunting. I had started a BTO from Kostal a few years but....
This is gorgeous in every way.

You are too kind! Asherby is a lullaby I wrote for my son Asher. If I ever get sleep between him and the 1 year old, I might get around to tabbing it out!

Very haunting indeed! I'm gonna miss this one very much, but it'll make someone else very happy!
