Martin OMJM String Suggestions
Hello, I'm the proud owner of a LOVELY OMJM. What strings do you like on this model? I've been VERY into D'ADDARIO Nickel bronze lights on my other guitars but want some tips for this particular instrument.
Thanks Last edited by cheer tunes; 03-26-2019 at 06:27 PM. |

When I bought my OMJM I had the opportunity to compare two of them side by side. I very much preferred the one strung with EJ17 (PB Meds) to the one strung with EJ16 (PB Lights). I like them and never tried anything else.

I had an OMJM for about 2+ years. My go to strings were the John Pearse PB lights.
Then again those are my go to strings for any guitar lol

As you can see from my signature, I own an OM-28, not exactly the same guitar as yours, but it has a spruce top and rosewood back and sides. Of the strings I've tried so far, I've really liked the John Pearse PB lights (600ML) and the new Martin PB treated lights (M540T).
I have a set of GHS silk and bronze next in the queue as I've never tried that type of string before, lower tension, easier of the fingers, but not sure if the sound will be more muted as a result. I plan on putting them my guitar this weekend so time will tell. I don't think you can go wrong with the JP PB lights or the new Martins, treated or not.

I’m both an artist endorser for John Pearse strings and accessories and a longtime fan of Martin guitars. The strings that I’ve liked the best on Martins more often than not have been the John Pearse 80/20 bronze strings, especially on rosewood Martins.
That hasn’t always been the case - the Martin Custom Shop 12 fret 00-21 I special ordered and received last year sounds best with JP phosphor bronze, and it’s a rosewood guitar. But I would recommend that you give the 80/20’s a try, just to make certain. You might find that they bring out aspects to the sound that other alloys haven’t. Just a thought. Wade Hampton Miller |

Fantastic suggestions everyone, thanks! I have most of those on hand so will give them a shot. I was thinking about trying nickel bronze or Santa Cruz parabolic as well, but those would be expensive over time.

I always start with fresh factory spec strings and then evaluate 4-5 different sets from there never knowing where a specific guitar will end up. The usual suspects always apply - Martin, D'Addario, Pearse. Mangan, Elixir....

I second the JP PB’s. I use mediums and tune down a half step, but I found they got the most range (lows, mids, highs) out of my OMJM.

Thanks, I used PB strings for 8 years and am obviously a fan BUT my ear might be a little fatigued with them. During that period I only had sitka top, mahogany back and sides guitars. For the new OMJM I'll start with 80/20s and go from there. Thanks again and enjoy the weekend.

Ditto...I do the same on my D18 yet I use New Mediums. The OMJM is one of the best sounding Martins I've ever played. That Engleman top makes a world of difference. Wish I had the coin to get the one I fell for! Hope you enjoy yours for many years. Try some JP 600L or New Medium PB's, they are a nice fit with the Martin tone.

I looked in to see if nickels were included but I see you’re already familiar with them so, carry on.

You might want to try Ernie Ball Aluminum Bronze!
