Just saw this ^^^. Why use an amp at all? I'd buy an easy-to-use multi-fx like a Zoom G3n with monitor speakers - arguably, has nicer tone than an amp for home use.

Coincidentally, SDOTD for July 8 is for an Eganter Tweaker.

The problem with smallish guitar amps in a small venue is that they're pointed right at the audience's ears and the player's ankles. To me, Blues Jrs with any Fender guitar are absolute ice picks, and DRRI's aren't as bad, but still brighter than I care for. I like the PRRI a whole lot better. I can post a couple Soundcloud examples of live-in-studio recordings of PRRI's if y'all are interested.

Also great and underpriced, if you happen to run across one, is the 90's Rivera-designed blackface Fender Concert. Same size and weight as a Deluxe but I think they sound much better. Smoother. No tremolo for some reason, but if you don't play Surf or Spaghetti you won't miss it.

The Monoprice, Stage Right, 15 W tube amp is very good for the price:

Comparison to Blues Jr:

Even has an effects loop and can be had, on sale, for under $200. I got mine for about $180 new.

I suppose this is dependent upon the user...and the version of Blues Jr. Not to mention the placement of the amp (to me, amp stands are an important part of the setup in any venue), and tone shaping used. Imo this could refer to ANY amp not placed and shaped correctly. Whether using my Strat, or my Tele, I get fantastic tones from my Lacquered/Tweed Blues Jr.

Can it go into “ice pick” territory if not shaped correctly? Absolutely. Yet as stated, many guitar/amp combos can produce that if not dialed in.

Short answer any Fender tube amp. I play 50's Baja Tele on my Vox vt40 which has pretty good fender tones as well as others with a bit of tweaking. I also have a Fender Super Sonic 22 that it sounds pretty good as well, incredible when turned up.
