Anyone Gig With a Yamaha Silent String
Did a gig with my silent string through a Fishman Loudbox today. At the last minute I decided to take it instead of 414 Taylor. I thought the results were really good. Just wondering if anybody is gigging this guitar?

I have not (yet?) gigged with my Yamaha silent guitar, but I have seen other guitarists gigging with theirs.

Before I looked up what Yamaha Silent Strings were all about, I thought you guys were starting a joke thread. "Right -- gigging with a silent guitar ..." |

I used to use one a lot. The lightweight made it great for hauling in gear and playing all day. Battery life was an issue when using onboard effects. I had the SLG110S with the LR Baggs pickups that took a 9v battery. Some day I'll get the SRT equipped model. My only gripe is that there are certain percussive things that a real acoustic can do that the SLG simply cannot. With a percussionist at your side it is great for gigging.

Only watched the first one, so far--what a set! From the comments I see that Dave Grusin was 80 at the time.

I only asked because I was surprised how good the Yamaha sounded through the Fishman.
I bought it about a year ago to use for practice but it has never left the house until today. I have only played it through headphones at home. |

I just ordered one on Amazon yesterday to try it through my rig and see if it can become my main gigging guitar. I play 315+ shows a year and with a previously-separated shoulder and a torn disc in my back, I really hoping this guitar works out.

Played a steel string version through a Henriksen cube amp a couple of weeks ago and was impressed. Guy selling wanted $385 for it. I may go back.

Gigged my nylon string version a lot. It has been a good solution. My usual caveat is, for folks that play acoustic plugged in routinely, many do not realize how much a factor the acoustic sound of the guitar plays in the perceived room sound. Even at fairly high amplified volumes some acoustic sound can be audible in the players "mix". When that is not available, the player may fell their house sound is lacking. These silent guitars give no audible input to the player at amplified volumes. It takes a little adjustment to get used to the lack of acoustic sound.
BTW the SLG is always a hit in front of new audiences. One of maybe two guitars I play that have actually drawn real attention from the crowd. And that helps keep their mind off of my playing... This is an early recording attempt we did with the SLG straight in to the board. https://www.soundclick.com/html5/v4/...ongID=13486338 hunter |

I've only heard the silent bass live - and it's wonderful.
