A nut extender is a temporary solution at best. It’s not so much that you’ll hear a difference in tone but you’ll feel a big difference in the playability and responsiveness of the guitar

i agree with rob that it is possibly a temporary solution. i've found that sometimes they work well and other times not so well. probably adds more tension. i'd recommend the weissenborn but they are not cheap. there are copies tho.
play music!

I ended up purchasing a wesseinborn guitar and man im glad I did. I got a cheap deal second hand. an anderwood one. the nut extender works well but it is a different sound. weissenborn is mellower and I cant stop playing it.

Can a squareneck resonator be far behind?

I put a nut extender on my resonator before and it sounds like a dobro but I feel slide on an acoustic you can listen to for longer than a resonator. acoustic sounds better being played buy itself than a resonator in my opinion

For playing in Hawaiian "lap" style (but not necessarily Hawaiian). Weissenborn started manufacture in 1913, and Kona in 1916. The quest was for louder instruments as interest in the sound grew. Martin followed with the early Ditson "Dreadnoughts" provided with a nut riser option - much louder but not very commercially successful. The National Tricone came out in C.1927 and Dobros (wooden body, single cone) a year later. Martin brought out their own Dreadnought in 1931 , again with a nut riser included, and sold about half a dozen! In 1934 Gibson brought out their first Jumbo and the Roy Smeck -a deep bodied jumbo with a square neck, and Martin dropped the Hawaiian thing and brought out the Dreadnought as a rhythm guitar. Then steel guitars came out and no-one wanted acoustic Hawaiian guitars, but dobros were later to be recruited into bluegrass and country and Nationals became associated with bottleneck blues.

If you like the Weissenborn sound it really can't be duplicated with a standard acoustic guitar. It's unique construction contributes to the produced tone, so the high nut acoustic isn't really comparable.
Do be aware that using a nut extender can cause permanent damage to a neck to the degree that it can't be returned to a standard guitar configuration. |

Those nut extenders greatly increase the tension on the neck and might pull the bridge up. Proceed with caution. There are some pretty affordable imported hollow necks out there. I’d go that route.
