Default Long distance movers, FL to NY

I went on Angieslist the other day, answered their questions, and within minutes I must have gotten 20 emails and calls. I expected this sort of response but wow - I really don't know how to select the best for my move (a 1br apt).

Thoughts on reliable movers that will not break the bank? Colonial Van Lines gave me a quote (though they would not come to my house to do visual inspection). And a small family owned company is coming to my place tomorrow to do a visual (Solomon and Sons). I do look up BBB ratings and reviews.

Thanks,

Are you anti-retiring?

Usually people go from NY to FL.

Hey Steve,

Check out Preferred Movers and Brightline Van Lines.
Both are reasonable, have good reviews and are easy to work with.
One or both(?) are based in Florida and offer a discount to people who
are moving from Florida to another state.

Hi Steve,

The phone will ring off the hook. Some of the folk will be brokers, not movers. They’ll give you a quote that sounds great, but hidden charges will appear for things like numbers of stairs. They’ll contract out your bid to another company. And expect cash on delivery.

I’m glad you’ve got a visual inspection. And it’s good to check BBB.

How many books are you moving? Last time I did the long move, I found it cheaper to mail mine.

I used a long range mover to move from DC to Vermont, and it was an expensive nightmare. When I moved back, I rented a truck, hired someone on one end to load it and someone on the other end to unload it. Worked perfectly.

Call Tommy at VAN WITH A MAN based in Manalapan, NJ.
His company specializes in the fla/ny route.
Great reputation and satisfied customers. Very competitive.
I worked closely with this company when I was in the storage industry.
I am not affiliated in any way.

Hey Mark - thank you I will call Preferred Movers and Brightline Van Lines. That's what I'm lookin for!

Jim - I was ready for the barrage. It was about the funniest thing. Within minutes after I filled out the form on angieslist I had what could have been a DNS attack on my phone. Dozens of incoming texts, dozens of calls. I haven't counted them all but between texts and calls maybe 100 during the last week. I can only imagine what someone that is not ready for this incoming would think. What an industry - slam bam thank you ma'am. I contacted a couple of them and am trying to keep control of the situation. I'm in my mid 60's and from the tech industry so I get it. I can only imagine how an elderly person or couple looking into moving would handle this. I keep my cell phone on silent. Only my kids, my ex, and my friends have my bat-phone landline.

I've already been hit with a "shuttle" service in case they can't come into my condo community and a 150 ft walk to my condo when they get off the elevator.

Definitely checking on subs. I won't do subs.

I have not many books. I've been addicted to the kindle since they came out. But I have 500 vinyl albums, a pretty high end audio system, new furniture etc.

I'm making sure they are bonded and licensed.

AX17609 - I used a mover to come to FL a few years ago. Was not terribly satisfied and they did charge me lots extra at the end. I would LOVE to do what you suggest. I don't want to be a general contractor on this one. Too much going on.

Thanks guys! I love this place!

Cannot recommend a specific moving line (Mayflower moving north 26 years ago and Atlas moving south a dozen years now) but look out for the insurance they offer. Odds are quite good that your homeowners or renters policy already covers your household goods fully while in transit. I paid $1800 extra for the moving company coverage when moving back to America from Alaska but found out too late to cancel it.

As a DIY kinda guy, I like the idea of renting your own truck and hiring strong young backs for the day to load and unload it on each end. Since the trip is all over land, keeping control of your stuff and your schedule is a benefit that more than offsets needing to drive yourself. IMO.

Whatever company you end up choosing,do your due diligence and vette them as best you can.

When I made the move from Ohio to Florida I went on Angie's list and chose a highly rated mover. To say they were movers from Hell is not an overstatement.

I soon found out why they were so highly rated. They take a few thousand off the final bill if you will sign a release which forbids you from ever saying anything negative about them.

So Angie's List never sees or hears from the "other" , dissatisfied customers.
Be careful!

Sorry, but there is no way to vet a mover. The guy you contract with isn't the guy who moves your stuff. All the professional attention you get up front is worth NOTHING when it actually comes time to move. That's a different crew, and these guys do not care at all. The driver of my mover quit while my stuff was in transit. They had to call someone else in to drive and hire local off duty firemen to unload the truck. It was unbelievably horrible, and there was no recourse.

Thanks for all of the advice! I ended up hiring the only mover that actually came to my condo to do a visual inspection. All employees, own their own trucks, and offered to put my stuff on a “straight through” truck to NY so they are able to guarantee a relatively tight window of delivery. Bonded. Licensed. Young guys that seem to have a nice following down here. Solomon and Sons.

Just another fork in the road. One day I’ll settle down. Or not. All I know is that I’ll be closer to my kids and old friends for the next couple of years at least.

Thank you!!!

Steve,
That’s good. I’m glad you got movers, not brokers. And I’m glad you get to be near kids and old peeps.
