Default Alaska: The easternmost state in the USA

Just came across that bit of trivia. Might win a few bar bets with it, just thought I'd share.

Yeah, but those aren't much of a surprise.

Considering the evidence I've seen of the education given kids these days in the country, keep your bar bets with people under 30 and you should do well.

Quite a few years ago, in the office I was working the young secretary (remember when offices had secretaries who did typing?) who had just come out of high school saw a map that showed all of Canada above the USA and she exclaimed "I never knew Canada was so big and went across the top of the whole US!" She had only ever seen those maps that show the conential US, and Hawaii and Alaska 'floating' to the west.

Of course, if it was a Mercator projection, Canada isn't that big.

And Reno is west of Los Angeles.... The South East corner of Montana is closer to Texas than it is to the North West corner of Montana.

I knew all that, but I lived in Alaska for many years and flew my Cessna around most of it - I'm used to thinking in terms of lat-long for navigation. I've been to the northernmost point in Alaska (latitude 71°) and waded in the Arctic Ocean briefly, and dove at the southernmost point in Hawaii (latitude 22°). If you look at an overlay of Alaska on the CONUS, you see that it extends almost coast to coast and border to border north-south - including the Southeast panhandle and the Aleutians.

Another trivia question that tripped me up: Is it possible to call from Florida to Oregon and only be two time zones apart?

I don't think that's so. In my own state of Minnesota there are places were you can look southward to Canada, but not due south, and I assume that rule depends on due south.

However, what happens if you look due south from Detroit or Port Huron Michigan?

Yeah, Minnesota has always been a bit strange, it took them many years to even define the Northern most point up in the "NW Angle" after the war of 1812. I've flown over it on my way to Kenora, Ont. it looks a lot like the swamp down in Florida-------but it IS in the U.S. and I'm sure that a portion of it might be "North" of Canada somehow.

Right.. and, when in Angle Township (the most northern point in the CONUS), you cannot get to any other part of the US without driving thru Canada first. Looking at the map, it is clear the-then "mappers" had way too much moonshine that day as that bit of land clearly ought to be in Canada. Very strange indeed.
