1950 Gibson CF-100 comes out of hiding
Long story on this one…
In the late 1960s my mom and her friend Peggy decided to learn guitar. Peggy’s dad gave her this Gibson to learn on, which he’d been playing in bars for years (“I think he used to play it for beer,” she told me, which made me like the guitar even more). They took lessons for a year or two and then moved on. Peggy put the guitar in a closet, where it stayed for ~50 years. Peggy’s husband passed away a few years ago and she pulled the guitar out to try again. She found a local teacher, had the guitar set up and the nut replaced (synthetic now). Playing guitar was hard on her hands, so back into the closet it went. Last year she decided to move to a retirement house and asked my mom if she knew anyone who would want her old guitar. You bet she did! From what I can tell, it’s a 1950 Gibson CF-100. The tuners appear to be original but not the bridge. When I got it a few months ago, I had a shop in Seattle reset the neck, re-glue the bridge, and glue a brace that had come loose. No other major damage, but plenty of wear and tear from those 1950s bars. I’m new to the forum and to guitar but have learned an awful lot here and thought some of you might get a kick out of these photos which I've tried to put on Imgur: https://imgur.com/Zxcn6ut https://imgur.com/tcAmMnl https://imgur.com/4ys5ABa https://imgur.com/Oji0Izq https://imgur.com/OzcD8gv https://imgur.com/p9VUY4W https://imgur.com/fRG1DJr https://imgur.com/z6JKf0d https://imgur.com/OEImtFp Last edited by Sam-; 03-21-2023 at 05:29 PM. I couldn’t get the photo link to work, but congratulations on scoring an old Gibson CF-100. Those are real dark horses, not widely known but just exceptionally cool guitars. When those came out with the cutaway they were way ahead of their time.

What a great story. I hope you are able to get the images to post. I always look forward to pics of a guitar that spent a lot of time in a bar. Especially earning its keep for beer. Congrats on a cool one.

I’m a huge fan of that model… huge.
They are rare and special. I’ve been searching for one for a while that I could afford. Ha. No luck. I should have bought the reissue a few years back. Anyways your model has the goods. Beautiful. You have a guitar with a great story, so kick back, pick a tune and have a beer.

What an incredibly cool old guitar! I love it... love the Florentine cutaway, too...
I sure hope you play it a lot... that's a piece of history, right there! Enjoy, and welcome to the Forum!

Cool somewhat Rare Guitar! Glad to see you are the New caretaker. I could be mistaken. Not sure, but that model I think was the first factory Flat top ever made with a Cutaway? Gibson was always on the cutting edge in those Golden years. Enjoy!

One of my pals has one a lot like that one but it's in very good condition.
he bought from some guy he knew back when he was living some where in new york city. The owner didn't seem to even know what to do with it. I think he gave him short money for it too this was back in the 80s before the whole "Vintage" thing got crazy.

Cool guitar and great history. I hope you play that one for years to come.
I’m not generally a fan of cutaways, but I’d keep that one forever.

Thanks for posting the photo, @lowrider!
The wear pattern is a mystery to me, too...especially at the treble side of the sound hole, where two sections are worn down to almost nothing but there's strip of wood between them that looks untouched. Doesn't affect the sound, though, and I like the mojo. |

Pickup in the soundhole, maybe? And you can see the pick swing marks on the body near the neck. Very nice though and I must play my 59 LG3....now! BluesKing777. |
