Which model Dobro?
I recently purchased a Dobro which, so I was told, was a Model 60 OMI from 1986. The serial number format on the head, however, does not conform to that used by OMI in the 1980s. The number (D 210 6) is apparently from the 1970s, specifically 1976. My question is, which model is it? A friend suggested it may be a Model 27. Does anyone have any idea what it may be, or can suggest a reference book/web site?

Still not sure
Thanks frankmcr for the heads up. I found an old OMI catalog showing various models, including the model 27 square neck. According to the specs, that model has a body depth of four and a half inches. Mine has a body depth of three and a half inches and tapers to three inches where the body meets the neck. So I am still not sure what I have. However, the search continues.

I have an OMI Dobro Square neck Serial # D-831-6. Bought it new in 1976 and the model is 60D (tobacco). Body measurements are the same as yours. Sounds like you have a sibling! Birthday is recorded inside at the neck joint.

Thanks Realbluesman for the info. This helps a lot in getting somewhere with an ID. Perhaps you know this: does the model 60 have three open holes as well as the two mesh holes? Mine has only the two mesh holes.

Yes three open holes and two mesh screens. IIRC the Model 27 lacked the three open holes. The D designation is believe is for dark (tobacco) finish.
Here is a link to 70's catalog: https://notecannons.com/catalogues/1...obro/index.php |

Here is a link which may not be valid for long because it's for sale...
https://reverb.com/item/28151432-dob...-1977-sunburst This is my squareneck Dobro's identical twin so I am inclined to think that mine is also a Model 27. But... a description in an OMI catalog of their Model 27 gives a body depth of four and a half inches, and mine is only three and a half inches. Perhaps it is a typographical error on the part of OMI. Are there four and a half inch Dobro bodies out there? |

I believe it is an OMI typo.

If that is the case, my quest is done! I have a 1976 OMI Dobro Model 27, not the 1986 Model 60 it was purported to be. From what I have heard about the up and down quality of OMI's guitars, maybe I am better off, maybe not. No matter. I enjoy playing it, it's a great learning experience for an old guy (72). Thanks again to all those who replied.

I have a one owner 1936 DOBRO Model 37, and I love it. I know it's a one owner, because my Dad bought it brand new.
