Default Show Your Collings

Seems like there is some Collings love on AGF. If you’ve got em and want to show em... Weekend Showcase.

Here are my 2 Collings that I bought new 6 years ago. All mahogany OM2 and Adi/Higuerilla OM2H

The photo is my D2H (with a couple modifications) next to a friend's tenor banjo, the video is me playing it in the back yard.

Those bursts are worth seeing in person. I never liked a burst until I got a SB 0002HG (traded, alas). That flipped me 180 degrees on what they can be.

Very nice looking guitars, maybe if I ever get to play one I'll understand why the hell they're so expensive!

It's funny, I've played a ton of them mainly because their factory isn't all that far from here. I had never played a single one that I was all that fond of - they *all* played "tight" for lack of a better description.

Then I found the one I bought in Telluride, it was brand new on consignment from the previous owner of the music store there. It's a 2015 model that I bought new in 2018. I got it at a great price too.

It plays great, and is the loudest acoustic I've ever played - including many other Collings, Martin Authentics, Bourgeois, Huss and Daltons, etc. I have tested it against all the others using an SPL meter and for whatever reason it's just a *loud* guitar. I got lucky!

The tone is a little different than say, a Martin, but it's a good tone. I have to say that I am very happy with it.

Collings electrics are fantastic guitars. Seriously. I think I have loved every single one I've ever touched! Waterloo is just the opposite - I've never played one i liked at all!

Guitars are funny, huh?

lol

:-)

I owned a Collings mandolin for a while but have never owned any Collings guitars, acoustic or electric. I certainly admire them, though, and have played dozens of them over the years, mostly on my yearly trips to the Kansas City area, when I always get in a half day or so in Lawrence. If Mass Street Music wasn’t in Lawrence I don’t think I’d get to that town nearly as often.

Anyway, a visit to Mass Street is always mandatory when I’m down there, and I revel in all the fine guitars and mandolins I get to play, especially the Collings instruments. If and when things finally return to normal, it’s worth a special pilgrimage to visit Mass Street. They have by far and away the deepest inventory of Collings guitars and mandolins that I’ve ever seen anywhere.

I have been in other music stores that have a good selection of Collings’ Waterloo product line, but no other store I’ve been to has had as many Collings guitars.

Here's a few shots of my OM2hT that I bought in 2018.

Since I bought it it's become my No1, working great for plugged in gigs (with a k&k/dpa and Felix) or mic'd (with my ETL Edwina) and it seems to still be 'opening' up, with the bass getting more responsive with playing time.

It's a great guitar, and I bought mine when they still came with the traditional cases which is a beautiful thing all of its own
