Handling charts
How do you deal with charts, especially long ones, when recording? Of course, I constantly work towards memorizing tunes, but I definitely play cleaner and more confidently with a score to look at. If nothing else, it helps me focus. It also keeps me from looking at my fingers, which tends to mess me up. But the down side is page flipping. So what's your solution?

I use an iPad 2 with with ForScore, scan my apps into my iMac as .pdf files and then load them into ForScore using iTunes. Flip the pages with a bluetooth page turner.
ForScore: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/fors...363738376?mt=8 Airturn page turner: http://airturn.com/?gclid=CNagjMHm9bkCFcF_Qgody0oAdA Works Great! |

Print out the pages so they are on individual sheets, instead of the flip sides of the pages? Then just line them up on stand(s).

That works for me, up to about 5 pages. I was working on a John Fahey tune that's about 10 pages long, because it never quite repeats itself. No alternate endings, coda, etc. I spread them out all over a table, but some of the sheets were so far away I needed binoculars. The resulting frustration led to my question. If there's a solution, it well be found on AGF!

With something like that, I wonder if it's necessary to play it exactly as written...my guess is John didn't.
As for long charts, sometimes you gotta line up some stands...I played in some pit bands and arrangements were long, but very rarely was the guitar playing the whole time, so there were breaks to flip. Flipping isn't always an option when recording...it makes noise. But somehow I don't see a Fahey tune in the same category as the overture from "West Side Story" as far as "stuff that needs to be played just as written." |
